Helping Single Homeless Charity with their allotment project in Ilford

There are lots of jobs from weeding to planting and general maintenance of the site. ! More information about the charity and project can be found here: Single Homeless Project and here: Greenhouse Project.
This is a London-wide charity working to prevent homelessness and help vulnerable and socially excluded people to transform their lives. Their GreenHouse sessions help people reduce isolation and build confidence from being part of something.
TASKS: There are multiple projects on site that we can help with, we have been asked to keep fruit trees free from weeds and well watered, to weed and water the flower beds, which the clients then maintain with sowing and growing variety of wildflowers and help keep paths clear from grass and weeds. If you have hand-forks, trowels or even a large gardening fork, do bring it in:)
TOOLS: Bring gardening gloves, warm and waterproof clothing depending on the weather.
PLEASE NOTE- THERE IS NO ACTUAL POST CODE FOR THE ALLOTMENT ENTRANCE. IT IS AT THE BOTTOM OF SUNNYSIDE ROAD ON THE JUNCTION OF STAINES ROAD What Three Words ///formal.daring.things Take the alleyway at the end and the gate is on the left. Please be prompt as the gate has to be locked once we are in, if you are not already on the group chat you might want to email me your number in case you can’t find us.

Linda and Julia are turning 100 YEARS OLD (together) - come and celebrate with a picnic and some games!

That's right, J&L are 100 in May and they couldn't just ignore it without celebrating it with the lovely company of fellow goodgymmers - everyone is welcome, we hope to see folks from other boroughs!
The plans are rather loose but we are hoping for good weather so that we can enjoy the nature of Fairlop Waters and play some summery games like rounders, frisbee and anything else that comes to mind!
If the weather is bad we can hide away in the lovely Boathouse that has a cafe and a restaurant.
Let us know if you can come along - will be great to celebrate gettting more mature with you!:)

Park And Ride
Julia, James and Helen joined up with Climate Safe Street Ride hosted by Redbridge Cycle Campaign at Valentines Park. The weather was kind to us and the constant stream of people coming into the park from all directions to observe Eid prayers was fascinating. Our ride leader had been concerned if the cyclists would get through to the meeting point but there was plenty of room for us all, the group was soon assembled and made its way out of the park to the sound of gentle prayer chants.
Next stop was in Roding Valley Park and meeting up with the people who started at Wanstead Park including Pauline. Our ride leader was delighted with the numbers that turned up compared to the few they had last year. It was lovely to see the children some of whom were little more than toddlers. We were split into two groups and introduced to the Ride Marshals two of whom were our very own Julia and James. From here we continued on the path along the pretty blossom filled Roding Valley and the ride leader dashed off to pick up the next group from Ray Park. We then set off passed Redbridge Lakes up to Claybury Park. Feeding the bikes though the bike gap was getting tedious so the lighter ones were passed over the top, if only we had known the group behind had a working key for the big gates 😂 After picking up another few in Claybury we set off to Fairlop Waters for a well deserved break and sustenance. From here the ride went back to Valentines Park and round the route again, dropping off people at their chosen parks along the way. Hats off to James and Julia for agreeing to marshal hence doing the full circuit twice.

Walking and Weeding on a Weekday
Lovely sunny evening for our task tonight!
We met at Hainault and decided to have a brisk walk into Fairlop Waters to take advantage of the beautiful evening! We walked around the lake and then back onto the fields to make our way to the school!
We decided to try and enter from the field, which we did but it turns out there isn't an easy way to get to the allotment so we did end up jumping over a little fence to make it into the EcoRanger area. We also met the chickens that were really fluffy:)
It's been a while since we've been here and there weeds have really sprung up but thankfully they are easy to clear and we had a nice time chatting and weeding whilst the evening was light.
We finished the session with a brisk walk back - lots of steps to make up for a day of sitting! Well done everyone!

Weekly Group session - meeting at Hainault Station

Meeting Place: We will meet at Hainault Station - go to the left after exiting the station and we'll meet there, unless it's raining then we'll meet inside the station. There will be place to store bags and a bike in a safe(r) place at the station but don't leave valuables.
What to bring: Please bring suitable weather clothing, gardening gloves and head torch..
Task: We will be coming back to John Bramston school for some weeding and digging. Think this will be the first visit whilst it's light!:)
Walking We will not be running this evening but we will take a nice walk through the fields to get some exercise to and from the task:)
As usual, you're encouraged to walk, run or cycle to the session!
