If you’re abbey and you know it...

Sun 21 Jun
Report written by Sarah Lee

After a few weeks of plogging around Danson Park we decided to give Lesnes Abbey Woods a bit of TLC. I had read on a local page that there was lots of litter being left in the woods and around the Abbey Ruins.

A small group of us met at the entrance to the woods as we distributed litter pickers. We had a carrier bag each so we didn’t have to share bin bags and headed into the woods. Whilst waiting for everyone we had already collected a bag full of litter from the side of the path. Walking through the woods, there wasn’t much rubbish, but once we reached the main open area by the ruins and cafe there was a lot more rubbish to be collected. We split up and went in loops around the abbey ruins before heading back up to where we met. We had 2 bin bags full at the end.

Help to clear litter from the woods

As more and more people are venturing out, there seems to be more litter appearing.

Here’s a chance to grab a litter picker and go on the hunt to make Bexley a tidier place!

We will be at Lesnes Woods at the Woolwich Road entrance are around 11am if you want to grab a litter picker. The plan is to walk through the woods towards the ruins and back again.

Alternatively, you can choose to litter pick in your own area.

Poppy power

Sun 14 Jun
Report written by Sarah Wren

On this gloriously sunny Sunday afternoon, six GoodGymers and the ever lovable Poppy set out litter-picking around Danson Park in Bexley.

Having been there last week, we focused on a different area this time, winding our way around the picnicking families and gathered groups. In the heat it was more of a purposeful stroll rather than plogging, but we still covered a couple of kilometers and found plenty of rubbish to fill two bin bags.

Several park users took the time to thank us for helping keep the place tidy. "It shouldn't be necessary for you to do this, but thank you."

All in the call of duty for GoodGym.

Run to plog around Bexley

Sun 14 Jun 15:15 pm
Crook Log Leisure Centre, Brampton Rd, , Bexleyheath,, DA7 4HH
Choose your space and clear any litter

If you’ve some time, why not get some fresh air by plogging where you think needs it? I’ll be around around Danson Park from about 3:15pm. We will be parked in the main car park and I will have litter pickers and will try to bring some hand gel and wipes. If you have your own gloves, please bring them along.

Naturally, please observe necessary precautions to keep yourself and others safe. This means following Government, and GoodGym guidance for Covid-19 safety (training here: https://www.goodgym.org/trainings/covid-19-coronavirus-safety-training) and being aware of the risk that objects you touch pose to you. Please use a litter-picker and/or gloves you can dispose of afterwards.

If you sign-up here, please send a pic of your haul (sarahlee@goodgym.org) and report if you see or find anything noteworthy and it can go in the report.

Picking in the rain 🌧

Sun 7 Jun
Report written by Sarah Lee

After weeks and weeks of limited GG activity in Bexley, aside from a few zoom quizzes, today we made up for it with missions and community missions. Sarah and Johnny had already completed a mission to help tidy a garden as we met at a safe distance in Danson Park ready for a plog/litter pick. Luckily the park has more than enough room for us to maintain the social distance guidelines. We all grabbed a litter picker and shared bags between us as we split into groups and headed into the park. The park has been getting increasingly busy over the last few weeks and result of picnics and gatherings seemed to be a lot of bottle tops, cigarette ends and the little gas canisters that seem to be everywhere. We didn’t manage to avoid the rain, but likely it was a lighter shower than yesterday! With 4 bags of rubbish we all made our way back home.

Keep safe 👊🏻 Sarah

Bexley News...

  • Well done Nick for reaching 50 good deeds tonight!
  • We have a brand new Community Mission on Saturday to help prepare and set up Bee Street. We will be meeting at Barclays Bank in Sidcup at 10am
  • We will be heading to Danson Youth Centre on Saturday for their [Quiz Night]. It's great fun! Let me know if you want to come as tables must be pre-booked. We already have 3 teams!

Tonight was a special run for us as it was GoodGym Bexley's 3rd Birthday

We met at Crook Log, thankful that it wasn't raining and no storms were going on outside! We heading out for our warm up before making our way to Welling Library.

As usual, we had a walking group and a running group.

We made our way straight down Welling High Street as we were meeting Patrick, who was giving us seeds to plant as part of the Bee Street Project.

On arrival, Patrick was already there and had started planting some small shrubs which were going to be acting as an edging/barrier to hopefully stop people walking over the garden area.

We were working on 2 areas tonight...

The Welling Cannon

and

Welling Library.

First we had to weed and tidy the garden areas, rake the soil and the spread the seeds.

There was actually a lot more garden area than we thought.

After not very long we were done. All the seeds had been sprinkled over the area, so we swept and tidying away before heading to the pub for our birthday celebrations!

Well done guys!

Until next time...

Happy running!
