Gemma Poulter

Nottingham

I am a qualified social worker working in Adult Social Care and have experience of working with adults with a range of needs: including mental health needs, drug and alcohol use, offending histories and a range of physical disabilities and mild and moderate learning disabilities. I have worked in many different posts and currently work as a senior manager in adult social care developing and delivering our local strategy to maximise independence and social connection whilst also enabling disabled people to access appropriate community resources and to be physically active. I am the lead for physical activity in adult social care and have worked with colleagues in different sectors in order to promote the benefits of and improve access to physical activity for everyone including people with disabilities. I have an extended network with links to people working in third sector organisations, those in the sport and leisure sector and colleagues working in the statutory sector and would use these to communicate about goodgym and to extend the network of people involved in making this happen in Nottingham. Personally, I am sociable and value the relationships and connections I have with neighbours and people living in my local community and have also witnessed and benefitted from the positive impact of such relationships for all local people and for those who are socially isolated or who need some support and believe that there is great power, resources and skill in communities and believe that everyone can make a contribution to their local community due to the diverse strengths of local people. It also helps to develop a community identity, enables inter-generational contact and helps with community cohesion.
