Elizabeth House Foodbank Deliveries (EASTER HOLIDAY MONDAY!)

Mon 12 Apr 18:45 pm
Elizabeth House Food Hub, 2 Hurlock Street, London, N5 1ED
Assisting this awesome project with foot deliveries to local households

Special Monday evening session- back to Tuesdays next week!

The lovely folks at the Elizabeth House Foodbank have invited Goodgym back to help with their ongoing community delivery service. The team were super productive over the festive period, and we are happy to continue their excellent work.

This task is will involve deliveries of food and supplies on foot to local households around Islington. Bringing a substantial rucksack could be useful, but not essential.

Area Activator Simon will be present to help with the running of this session.

Ellie Simpson has done a 6 month mission streak. Mon 5 Apr 2021

Ellie just completed a six month streak of doing missions. That’s so many bags of garden rubbish cleared and jobs done to help someone out and put a smile on their face. Give Ellie a cheer to encourage them to keep up the good work.

Ellie Simpson has done 50 good deeds and got their black t-shirt Mon 5 Apr 2021

The next time you see Ellie, they might be wearing black instead of red. They've completed 50 good deeds with GoodGym and have earnt their black t-shirt. Give them a nod when you next see them.

Report written by Ernestas Jegorovas-Armstrong

When I arrived GoodGymmers were already bursting out the door with bags in their hands.

While loading a food parcel for delivery, a few more joined (you can easily spot a GoodGymmer, not by their red shirt, but their brisk pace and joy in their eyes).

Got all of the allocated food parcels out in just over half an hour, nothing beats a large task like busy bee GoodGymmers.

Shout out to Ellie for her 50th good deed!

Thursday Food delivery

Thu 17 Dec

An amazing new partnership with the Shoreditch Trust!!

We pick up parcels from the Waterhouse Restaurant at 11:20 and route will take around an hour to deliver about 10 parcels. Ruck sacks and panniers would be helpful!

We will be delivering food parcels to members of our community who are seriously ill, recovering from a stroke or usually rely on carers family or friends because they are unable to prepare food themselves. cannot safely visit a food bank because of mobility problems, risks to their health or risks to someone they provide care for. are without friends and family to drop off shopping. are homeless, and living in temporary accommodation with no kitchens, or shared facilities which are unsafe for them to use.

We really need your help to make these deliveries so be great to have you along!! Best ways to get about on the delivery routes will be walking or bikes! Might get a bit messy running!! We will get routes the day before and will pair you up with another GoodGymer or 2.

If you would like to be in pair group with someone in particular let me know at joel@goodgym.org. Once we have pairs sorted I will open up listing to allow groups of 3. If you would prefer to do delivery solo just let me know.

Any problems on the day message me (Joel) on 07895628708.

G.O.A.T (greatest of all tasks) 🐐 πŸ„ 🐈

Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

8 Goodgym folks from all different boroughs joined us at Freightliner's Farm last night for one of our most popular tasks. We had the opportunity to say hello to some of the lovely animals for one final time in 2020 (including Marley the cat, Bramble the goat and Belinda the cow).

We met up with Liv, the main volunteer coordinator for the farm at the main gates (she was busy selling jams and chutneys to passers by at the time- Β£3 a jar, very tasty!). She admitted that the task tonight was not going to be glamourous at all (which is to be expected!), and we needed 6 people to help with mucking out the goat stable. 2 of our team were also required to hang Christmas decorations on the trees outside (by the fancy chicken pens).

We made a production line over the course of the hour, with two Goodgymmers using forks to clear the goat stable (gathering straw and... other stuff), two or three folks carting wheelbarrows to and from the muck pile, and two more helpers unloading the contents of the wheelbarrows on the other side. It was a very effective chain, and Liz was very impressed with the amount of progress we had made on a big ardous job!

It was an absolute pleasure to see you all again last night, and we'll certainly return to Freightliner's Farm again soon.

Final Freightliner's Farm Trip of 2020!

Wed 16 Dec 18:30 pm
Sheringham Road, London , N7 8PF
One last trip to help out at Freightliner's Farm

Goodgym Islington are back at Freightliner's Farm for the final time this year, after some great sessions earlier on in lockdown.

The farm is intending to completely open up to the public again next year (mostly school groups are allowed access at the moment), and Liz (the coordinator) will have a few tasks available for us to commit to tonight!

Please note that the floodlights from Market Road Gardens football club will not be on during the task, but Trainer Simon will bring his portable floodlights. However, we recommend bringing a headtorch for better visibility.

Digging that strut

Mon 14 Dec

Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice

8 Goodgymmers braved the soggy weather (but actually unseasonably warm temperatures) on Monday evening at the Barnard Park Adventure Playground. Our crew included Kathleen and Jack participating in their first community missions.

Sarah, the volunteer coordinator for Awesome CIC (who run a collection of adventure playgrounds across London) directed us to a collection of shovels and rakes laid out across the playground. Our main objective was to dig holes by the main struts of the play apparatuses to check if the wood is safe, solid and most importantly, not rotted. It is a huge job for a small team, so 8 extra pairs of hands is certainly appreciated!

Eilidh and Jack also helped with clearing the main open play space (used for football and sports games) of leaves, fallen branches and mud. Anything which could be a slip hazard for school children and youth club visitors.

By the end of the session, the weather improved, layers were removed due to hard work and 9 holes were digged up, checked and filled in again. Smashing effort everyone- well done!
