Done that, bin*ned it! 😉

Report written by Sani Koch

After one of Amy's fabulous fitness sessions (think self-inflicted torture with purple rubber bands) for some of us, 6 Goodgymers went to war against rubbish with the weapons of choice. Hoops, bags and litter pickers at the ready and off we went. One group went along the Braywick Road and the other took on part of the parkrun route... There were heaps of litter along the road (3 full bags in total - well done team) but thankfully not as much inside the nature reserve with only half a bag in total. Overall a very satisfying mission and a great way to see other members of Goodgym - in a socially distanced way of course.

Feelgood Friday @ the baby bank

Fri 19 Mar
Report written by Wendy Rumble

Having jogged down to the Baby Bank in Maidenhead town centre on a sunny Friday morning, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I met fellow Goodgym members at the door and we were welcomed into to a busy warehouse full of donations for families in need. Within minutes we were allocated pre-prepared tasks which was brilliant. We got straight to it. Someone had tipped them off about my prior buggy experience and with my head torch I was straight into buggy assembly! Donna and Ruth tackled coats, cosy toes and bedding sorting! I really enjoyed helping this busy local charity and look forward to getting back.

Helping the Baby Bank

Fri 19 Mar 09:30 am
4 Providence Place, Maidenhead, SL6 8AG
Help provide essentials to vulnerable families

The Baby Bank helps families in extreme need with everyday essentials such as nappies, wipes, school uniform and shoes, as well as larger items such as cots and buggies. They are completely volunteer run and rely on donations of new items and good quality second hand clothes, baby care equipment and furniture. During the Covid-19 crisis, demand for the Baby Bank's help has increased dramatically.

We can help by sorting through donations, preparing bundles ready for delivery and cleaning donated furniture.

Meet opposite Monello Hairdressing and please bring your head-torch with you - the storage facility has poor lighting. This task is indoors and face coverings are mandatory.

The task is listed for an hour but there may be the opportunity to stay and help for longer.

Please note your Area Activator Amy may not be present at the task and the task may need to be cancelled if we do not find an experienced GoogGym member to lead. If necessary, notice of cancellation will be sent by email no later than 9pm the night before. Please check your junk mail as well to make sure you're kept in the loop.

The toy kingdom interrupted my run!

Fri 5 Mar
Report written by Alain Tallier

Slightly nippy day for a run, so a warm shelter helping out at the Baby Bank was very welcome. Upon arrival, fellow GoodGymer, Donna Marie Esler was already hard at work helping out. I was then tasked with sorting out some boxes of toys that had been donated by a generous corporate donor. Turns out it was half a toy shops worth of brand new toys that will be making their way to some deserving children to brighten up the world with their huge smiles.

Celebrating our first birthday at the Baby Bank

Fri 26 Feb
Report written by Amy Lovell

Exactly one year on from GoodGym Windsor and Maidenhead's launch, it was great to return to our regular beneficiary, The Baby Bank. It was also lovely to meet Donna for the first time as she joined us for her second community mission.

Following the recent announcement about schools reopening, uniform is once again in demand, so we had the satisfying job of checking donated uniform for quality and sorting by size. As we cleared the bigger boxes, we created lots of little piles of tights, t-shirts and P.E shorts ready for 'filing' and time passed quickly. In every few bags of donated items there is always something a bit unexpected - today's was an adult sized cow-boy hat..!

It is always busy at this amazing charity and this morning there was some extra excitement as the founders were being interviewed on camera by one of the health visitors who brings them referrals. Donna and I were able to listen to Rebecca telling the health visitor the charity's story while we worked.

Whilst it was heartening to hear how much support they are giving, it was very sad to hear how busy they are as a direct result of the pandemic. Their beneficiaries are often hard-working parents, who feel embarrassed to ask for help, but have no choice as their livlihoods have been snatched away by Covid-related restrictions and Lockdowns. Rebecca spoke particularly about nappies: it is essential for children to have access to clean nappies for their health and comfort, and lots of us would take them for granted, but the cost of daily essentials like these can really stack up and become unamanageable. Rebecca said it can be upsetting to learn of so many families' struggles, but there is no time to dwell as there is always another referral waiting to be processed. On more of a positive note, she said it is amazing how generous local people are when they make direct appeals for donations. She gave the example of a specialist buggy they appealed for a few weeks ago - and within hours they had three.

Thank you for having us Baby Bank - it is always a privilege to be able to contribute the small amount that we do.

Thank you also to Amanda Quincey, who joined me for a celebratory 1st birthday run (complete with balloons!) on the Maidenhead Parkrun course on my way home.
