Big box, yellow box, coffee box, pasta box - but which quarter box?

Tue 25 Jan
Report written by Rob Haworth

Is June 2022 Quarter 2 or 3? Which box is for August? Can you find the expiry date on this...? All valid questions when sorting out the various food donations in the Big Yellow Box storage centre.

The task was simple enough, sort the hot drink boxes along with the pastas and then lentils into different boxes depending on their expiry date. But which box was for quarter 2 again? And is August quarter 2 or 3? Luckily enough the 7 Kingston GG members were awake enough to swiftly move through the workload and even with the occasional sprint/slow jog/wonder down to turn the lights back on, we finished within the hour and were faced with one more challenge - find the magic button that opens the door...

Sorting food at the Foodbank

Tue 25 Jan 19:00 pm
Big Yellow Self Storage, 225 Hook Rise South, Tolworth, KT6 7LD
So food can be distributed to those most in need

We have several units at the foodbank and one of the most important tasks we have to do is sort the donated food and make sure it is all in date. Every item of food that leaves here has to be fresh and ready to eat and people sadly don't always check before they kindly donate. We need to check all the expiry dates on all the items of food. There's always lots to do!

Risks
The crates can be heavy so please be sensible when lifted. Please lift with bended knees.

It is an indoor task so please do a lateral flow the same day and please don't turn up if you are feeling unwell in any way. Don't forget your mask and use hand-sanitiser when you arrive and leave.

The task owner is Ian and his number is 07809646575

THIS IS A COMMUNITY MISSION NOT A GROUP RUN Apologies but I can't change the settings.

Craig Shardlow has done a 6 month mission streak. Sat 8 Jan 2022

Craig just completed a six month streak of doing missions. That’s so many bags of garden rubbish cleared and jobs done to help someone out and put a smile on their face. Give Craig a cheer to encourage them to keep up the good work.

Dig deep

Sat 8 Jan
Report written by JP

The first community mission of 2022 was at one of our most regular spots - out on Ham Lands on a chilly January morning. The task was familiar as we helped the Friends of Ham Lands clear weeds and dig up stubborn brambles - starting the year as we mean to go on!

Helping the Happy Ham Landers

Sat 8 Jan 10:00 am
Corner of Riverside Drive / Croft Way, Richmond, TW10 7NB
Improving the natural habitat of the Ham Lands nature reserve

This is a repeat community mission, which takes place every second Saturday of the month, from 10.00 - 11.30am.

The Friends of Ham Lands work with local naturalists and the Council’s ecology officer to identify work that needs doing in the Ham Lands area.

Tasks will vary from week to week: sometimes we will be clearing weeds, brambles or other undesirable plants, sometimes tackling Himalayan Balsam by the river (in the summer), sometimes it will be a litter pick.

All of these tasks are aimed at (1) maintaining the sheltered open grassland areas and open woodland, to improve the habitat for flora and fauna, and particularly for the local butterfly population and (2) maintaining some of the small footpaths through the scrub that are in danger of being overgrown, to ensure people can continue to enjoy the area.

Please wear working clothes including strong and waterproof footwear. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Friends of Ham Lands are not able to provide gloves and hi-vis vest. Please bring your own gardening gloves. If you have a hi-vis vest or jacket please wear it. If you have secateurs or saws please bring them.

Children are very welcome but need to be accompanied by an adult.

We meet at the corner of Croftsway and Riverside Drive https://goo.gl/maps/78E2thtb5J1f1rP2A

Time: 10.00 – 11.30am

Bag Ladies and Men

Sat 9 Oct
Report written by JP

The morning was a little fresher than we’ve been used to in recent weeks, with mist hanging over the tree tops. We made our way deeper in the Ham Lands than usual, tasked with clearing a section by the trees of brambles and other plant matter.

It was a good bunch with a collection of Richmond regulars and Freya, Zoe and Craig from Kingston. Armed with rakes and loppers the team got stuck in and soon enough there were piles of plant matter gathering alongside the path.

We only had one large canvas bag this time so it filled up pretty quickly, ready to be dragged by a team of Bag Ladies or Bag Men (or a mixture!) into the undergrowth to be emptied out.

It was lots of fun as usual, even if by the end our focus was waning as we were all ready for a trip to the Swiss bakery for a hard-earned cheesy reward!

Next up will be 6th November - link to sign up coming soon!

There's a hole in my barrow dear Susan

Sun 19 Sep
Report written by Rob Haworth

Painting may have been the description of the task but that job had already been done, so we were set to work digging and sifting soil from the mound, to make nice and fine soil ready for potting. Different hole digging styles were on display, with Petra's getting deeper and deeper and Rob's getting wider and wider. Neither uncovered much treasure sadly and definitely no gold, just a bucket full of rocks and glass.

Meanwhile, Zoe and Craig were forking and raking flat an area down below ready for some paving stones. They soon filled a container full of roots and weeds seemed very chuffed with their work after - and so they should be!

We were rewarded with coffee and cake at half time and had a good chat about dog adoption and our favorite GG tasks - which the Hogsmill community garden is absolutely one of them.
