When shall we three weed again?

Fri 20 Aug
Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Thankfully no thunder, lightning or rain today, but last night's downpour meant no watering was needed! All the vegetables were growing well, but so too were the weeds. Claire, Sheila and Juli cleared nettles and brambles from the path to the compost bins, and weeded the runner bean bed.

Helping at the Maidenhead Community Allotment

Fri 20 Aug 13:00 pm
Boyn Grove Community and Resource Centre, 11 Courthouse Road, Maidenhead, SL6 6JE
Support your local community veggie plot

Stop by the Maidenhead Community Allotment on your run to help this wonderful local resource thrive. This week, the path to the new pallet compost bins needs clearing. There are some nettles! No watering is needed this week, but if possible, the runner bean bed, the other long bed and the two net-covered beds all need weeding. There will be spinach ready to pick if anyone would like some.

Gardening gloves are a must, and probably covered arms and legs as we have nettles to tackle!

The allotment is at the North East end of the Library and Resource Centre building. If you are standing at the end closest to where the playground is, head past the library to the other end and you'll see the allotment.

Moor than three bags full!

Sun 1 Aug
Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Goodgym runners, whither will you wander,

by the stream and hedges, all around the moor.

Goodgym don't think litter-picking's dull,

A pleasant hour's stroll yields three bags full.

One bag from Ruth and one bag from Claire,

and one bag from Juli, now there's no litter there!

In fact, there were so many bottles (and our arms were growing so long), that we had to stop halfway round to decant some of them into a bin!

Helping The Autism Group move premises

Thu 29 Jul 19:00 pm
Harmony Education Centre, 4 Cordwallis Street, Maidenhead, SL6 7BE
Help this Maidenhead based charity move to their new home

The Autism Group are a Maidenhead based charity committed to supporting and enhancing the lives of young people on the autistic spectrum, their parents and carers. They are moving premises and have asked for our help. This task will require lifting bags, boxes and dissembled furniture up and down stairs and you will be indoors for some of the time so please bring a face mask as well as your protective gloves.

Please note that this task will take place across 2 locations. We will meet at the Harmony Education Centre on Cordwallis Street to load things up. We will then go on foot in small groups to the new premises at 69 High Street to unload. The distance between the two addresses is approximately 1km.

There is limited parking in bays marked 'Harmony' at the start location, as well as on streets nearby. The expectation is that more than one person will be returning to the start location at the end, so you won't need to do that journey alone if you don't want to.

Can't wait to see you there!

GROUP RUN/WALK to survey trees at beautiful Ockwells Park

Tue 27 Jul 18:45 pm
Ockwells Park, Maidenhead, SL6 3YX
Help survey and maintain the New Thrift Wood planting site

Group runs are back! If you remember group runs from before the pandemic then you might recall they always happened on Wednesdays and started at Maidenhead Town Hall. Well things have changed a bit and this week we are group running (or walking if you prefer) on a Tuesday evening and meeting at Ockwells Park Car Park, but otherwise its the same: getting fit and doing good all rolled into one. It is the stuff that GoodGym dreams are made of!

We've had some great community missions planting trees and acorns to help grow the New Thrift Wood at Ockwells Park, and we are thrilled to be invited back to survey the planting site on this Group Run.

If you joined GoodGym during the pandemic and you're wondering what a group run is: it is like a community mission but with more fitness and opportunities to be social thrown in, and the helping at the task part of the session might be a bit speedier than at a community mission. It is lots of fun and all fitness levels are welcome.

  • This evening we will meet at the car park at Ockwells Park for a quick warm up and briefing.

  • We will then set off on a 1-2km route to the task. Walkers are likely to take a more direct route than runners.

  • All paces are welcome. We always make sure there is an experienced GoodGym member back-marking on walks and runs to make sure no one gets left behind.

  • Walkers and runners will then gather at the planting site to get busy with our task: identifying dead trees and removing their guards and canes, and counting up and weeding around the survivors.

  • Don't forget you will need your own protective gloves.

  • Be warned also that the ground might be a bit uneven and boggy at the planting site.

  • At the task we will take some photos (just let me know if you don't want to be photographed) and hopefully have time for a quick fitness session too.

  • Then we all head back to our start location running or walking for a quick stretch and to say our goodbyes.

Can't wait to see you there!
