Clearing out a hallway to prepare for major works

Tue 25 Jan 18:15 pm
Victoria Gardens, Brighton, BN1 1WN
to turn it into a Junk Food Cafe

This week three really great organisations are joining forces to make something great happen!

The Brighton Table Tennis Club have joined forces with The Real Junk Food Project to create a junk food cafe in the hall next to the BTTC. And of course the third great organisation is us!

We'll be helping them clear the hall to prepare it for some major building works.

This is an indoor task so please bring a mask and I'm sure we can find something to do outside for anyone who is uncomfortable working inside.

Meet at Victoria Statue at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start.

Under a night Sky Scrapers

Tue 18 Jan
Report written by Tara Shanahan

What a perfect evening for Goodgym, cold but crisp and still and although a bit cloudy the light of a full moon added to the atmosphere. And it was great to welcome back Abi, Davidand Tabithawho have all missed the past few months due to dodgy knees, backs and hearts!

Our task was to help Stuart from the Palmeira & Adelaide Garden Fund group keep on top of all the work that needs doing in these lovely and well used squares. Council cuts means that there just isn’t the people power to do all the work, and groups like this really make a huge difference in keeping our open spaces tidy.

Our efforts tonight focussed on the northern most part of the square (oval?!) around the floral clock I discovered that the clock was installed to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II so it’s not surprising that it no longer works!

We scraped all the grass that had spread from the side it should be to the side it shouldn’t, sweeping followed scraping, shovelling and bagging followed sweeping and in about 45 minutes the job was done. Lots of passers by thanked us for our efforts, it’s always good to know that we are appreciated.

A quick fitness session of lunge variations followed before we went our separate ways into the night.

Helping out in Palmeira Square

Tue 18 Jan 18:15 pm
Angel of Peace (Peace Statue), Kingsway, Hove, BN3 2WN
to maintain a well used public space

Palmeira and Adelaide Square Garden Fund are a group of local residents who are making a real effort to inject a bit of 'community' into their community!

The Square is well used by residents and the local neighbourhood. We will be focusing on weeding beds in the floral clock area.

Meet at The Peace Statue at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm sharp start of the run/walk. Fitness session will follow the task on the prom.

Meal Deal

Sat 8 Jan
Report written by Tara Shanahan

A soggy sandwich, a packet of crisps and a fizzy drink for a few quid? No, you’re alright thanks.

A couple of hours weeding and spreading muck in the rain for a vegan curry? Now you’re talking, that’s my kind of meal deal!

Luckily 7 other Goodgymmers are of a similar mind so despite the rain we headed to community pub The Bevy to help them prepare their fruit and veg garden for spring by weeding around the raspberries and spreading manure. Yes it was raining but no we didn’t care and the food we were given as a thank you was very much appreciated by all!

Get The Bevy veg garden ready for spring

Sat 8 Jan 09:45 am
50 Hillside, Brighton, BN2 4TF
Because it’s more than a pub – it’s a community centre!

The Bevy is brilliant! It’s a community owned pub that is so much more. It hosts a number of community groups and during lockdown it turned into a meals on wheels service.

This Saturday they are hoping to get a few locals along to help get the veg garden ready for spring and have invited us to join in.

Jobs include weeding fruit bushes, digging out old raspberries & mulching with manure.

I'll be doing Bevendean Down parkrun first and heading straight there so come along from 9.45am. The session will end at 12.30 when The Bevy will supply you with a meal as a thank you! Please drop in when you like and stay as long or leave as you like!

Planting trees with the South Downs Eco Cooperative

Sat 5 Feb 10:00 am
The Sheds, Brighton, BN1 8YJ
We'll improve the health of the local landscape, making it more pleasant for locals to enjoy, and helping to sequester some carbon to combat climate change.

We'll be planting tree 'whips' (very baby trees) alongside other volunteers with the South Downs Eco Cooperative near the Devil's Dyke. I suggest wearing or bringing along some wellies and wet weather gear - but don't let that phase you! While we may get rained on, we'll be sure to have fun with this rewarding experience. We are also requested to bring along our own spades if we have them. Although I've listed the task as being for two hours, you can leave early, or stay later as I think the volunteers will keep going until all whips are in the ground. Hope to see some of you there!

Tree to a Good Home

Tue 4 Jan
Report written by Rebecca

Another year, another night of ferrying festive firs to their final resting places. Winter pulled out all her tricks - newly freezing temperatures and treacherous wet leaves (hope your knee isn't too bad Rachael) but of course, GoodGym prevailed. Welcome to Rosie andCarla

Meeting at Hove Peace Statue, we split into teams, each covering a section of lovely Hove. Everyone sped off in different directions, armed with Tara's intel on the best areas to find the abandoned trees (including a suspiciously close former collection point that particularly benefited one prolific team).

Some dragged and some hauled their hard-won booty to the collection point, and in the end about 50 trees were added to the pile. We finished with a brisk seafront AMRAP session won by a super keen Jay Overall, a great start to the year!
