The lure of manure

With Rebecca out of action, Beth and James were enlisted to tell some newcomers all about GoodGym. We met in Brockwell park, just outside the lido where distinguishing the wannabe GoodGymers from the regular gym goers and runners was harder than we thought.

James acted as a great beacon though and by 12.30pm we'd recruited some runners eager to give GoodGym a try. We started with a warm up jog and followed that up with some hill sprints interspersed with information about GoodGym. We talked about group runs, coach runs, races and the social stuff that we get up to.

Once everyone was fully informed we headed back up the hill to the Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses. There were two jobs on offer, shoveling manure and cleaning windows. Five of us opted for the slightly cleaner job of washing down the windows along one side of the greenhouse and had everything looking sparkling within 20 minutes.

For James, Robbie and Emma the lure of the manure was too strong to resist and they got to work moving it from one compost bay to another, managing to shift an impressive amount in a short space of time. With our task down all that was left was for us to run back down the hill, do some stretches and say our goodbyes.

Starting as we mean to go on...

A great turn out for GoodGym Lambeth’s first starter session of 2016. It was VERY cold, but lovely and sunny which made it a great say and everyone was smiling (or where your faces merely frozen in that position?) as you ran up and down the hills in Brockwell park and made our way to the greenhouses. Excellent effort on the circuits too. I hope you all ache a bit tomorrow.

It was great to talk to many of you about what you were looking to get out of GoodGym and I hope you enjoyed a bit of gardening in the fresh air. Gardening, sun and running are all proven to be mood enhancers so we should all be feeling dead happy right now.

I’m hoping to see you all at our weekly Tuesday night runs. You don’t have to go every Tuesday, just whenever you can. If you still have reservations I will deal with them now…

You say: I don’t have time

GG Lambeth says; The run is a total of 90 minutes (and once a month will only be 60 minutes), which includes the meet & greet at the beginning, the task, the run, circuits, a stretch and cake and bubbles afterwards. When else you possibly fit so much into 90 minutes? Not having time is exactly why you should come…. lots of boxes ticked in one night. Dead productive.

You say: I’m worried I’m not a good enough runner/can’t keep up

GG Lambeth says; We’re a mixed bunch, this ain’t no elite running club. No one will ever feel they are not a good enough runner. We have volunteers who have only just taken up running. We also have multiple tasks so you can pick your distance and speed, regular runners bring up the rear so you can’t be left behind, and this week we have a task at our meeting point so in theory you don’t have to run anywhere (although there will be one mile time trials for those who want to work on their speed).

You say; I need to concentrate on my ‘proper training’ as I have a race coming up

GG Lambeth says; WHAT?? THIS IS PROPER TRAINING. I’m a running coach and personal trainer… at any given opportunity runners are given the chance to push their running.. whether it’s by doing a longer run to work on pace, a short fast run to work on speed, or circuits to work on functional strength. We have some great runners who compete nationally who still manage to find a way to use GG to push their training. Plus you get access to all the free advice and training plans you can handle. This week, there will be a choice of a long run to West Norwood or you can chose a shorter faster run and circuits for you to push yourself with…. also some good hard labour at Myatt’s field that will get your upper body really working hard.

You say; I wont get out of work on time

GG Lambeth; Did you know you employees that exercise are 70% more productive and efficient than those who don’t.? Tell your boss that, then shut down your computer and get to GG Lambeth. Go into work the next day feeling ready to kick ass and dazzle your boss. Get promoted. Get paid millions. Get hired as Alan Sugar's right hand man on The Apprentice. Sorted. Don’t worry if you are running a bit late.. a group will be at the meeting point all evening so you can turn up and pitch in when you get here.

You say; I’m out with my friends that night

GG Lambeth Says; BRING THEM! We have three tasks this week we need people to paint, move logs, weed and water plants… We need as many people as possible… What a great way to hang out with your mates and meet new ones?

You say; I have a tinder date

GG Lambeth says; Our runners are the best looking, most charismatic, funny, fit and in intelligent you’ll find ANYWHERE. Your potential husband or wife is currently meeting at 6.45pm at Papa’s Park every Tuesday… We even had an engagement for a GG Lambeth couple last week. We're having a GoodGym Lambeth wedding!!! GG is better than Tinder.. plus these are people giving their spare time to help others so you know they are good eggs.

You say; Tuesday is my pub night

GG Lambeth; Well how about that? It’s ours too. We’ll be heading to the Duke Of Edinburgh after for some beers. Sorted.

That covered everything? See you all soon I hope x
