Get Rid Of And Donate (GROAD) do amazing work making use of unused STUFF donated to them by the public. We've previously helped them pack Christmas presents and toys for local kids and packed and distributed bags of essentials for rough sleepers.
They're expecting lots of donations so have asked for our help to sort items into categories. Members of the public book a slot to bring their stuff and our job is then to put the stock into the right place.
The task is at St Faith's Church Hall, near North Dulwich station which is up the road from Herne Hill station. There may not be a member of taskforce there, but the GROAD team are all very friendly 😊
Please bring a mask as the task will be inside 🤿
We've got two fab tasks this week:
Task 1: is heading 4km each way to St. Michael's Church in Streatham to help sort out more clothing donations.
Task 2: is 1km each way (with optional longer distance for those who want) to help spread woodchip at the wonderful community gardens at the Moorlands Estate. Please bring a headtorch and gardening gloves for working outside.
Amy is a now a fully fledged GoodGym runner. They've just run to do good for the first time. They are out there making amazing things happen and getting fit at the same time.
This evening saw a BONANZA edition of lovely new people and some equally lovely old-timers - so much so that we had FORTY-SEVEN runners on this somewhat balmy November evening. WOWEEE! Luckily we had just the task for so many hands - we were heading to Myatt's Fields to support the small team there with leaf collection. This time of year, thousands upon thousands of leaves fall from the trees and park gardener Taye has the thankless task fo trying to clear them all up. What he needed was FORTY-SEVEN runners to help him out. WHAT LUCK!
I wish I had forty-seven runners to help me out! Said Taye
On arrival, we headed down to the tennis courts and one team set about clearing leaves from inside the courts. Everyone else gathered leaves from flower beds surrounding the lovely bandstand area. Huge bags were filled up with the autumnal debris and were taken to a hidden away area, where a natural compost heap was formed, for them to rot away over the months. Hooray for nature.
When we had finished, everyone got into pairs and played a best of three squat knee fencing competition. Tactics varied wildly but everyone tested their quads in the process.
After we ran back to base, we enjoyed some delicious lemon drizzle cake from Jim and yummy biscuits from Iona. DELISH!
This week we'll all be heading 2.5km each way to the lovely Myatt's Fields. We help the park staff to keep this green space tidy all year round. There's loads of autumnal leaves that need clearing away and bagging up. Plus we'll use the park for some fitness too.
Please bring a headtorch and gardening gloves for this task if possible. You can pick both up from the pound shop!
This week will see the Bake Off FINALE - don't miss it.
We're back to the lovely, historic Windmill Gardens this week. The Friends of Windmill Gardens will set us about some gardening to prep the space for the winter months. Expect weeding, pruning, litter picking and more. It's a 1km run there so great for people looking to get back into running.
Another group will be heading 2km up to the Tulse Hill estate to support Incredible Edible LEAP to create a better space for growing veg. A polytunnel needs cleaning and other handy jobs.
All welcome! Bring a headtorch if you have one as it is starting to get dark into the evenings now.
