Local cycling groups and some business are encouraging the use of the east Finchley cycle lane with a day of activities and shop discounts. We will also be looking to do a litter pick at the Lido Retail park and at Cherry tree Woods at either end of the cycle lane. Then enjoy a social get together at one of the venues offering discounted refreshments.
Details of shops to be announced. Currently including discounts at the Cherry tree Park café and the Phoenix Cinema.
Some litter picking equipment will be made available but please bring your own gloves.
The cycle lane is 1.5 miles long so three loops would be approximately 9 miles if you’re looking to add to your Strava mileage on the day.
A magnificent seven Goodgym members gathered at the Phoenix cinema to run and have some fun. We were going to deliver flyers for the cinema but unfortunately due to budget restrictions they didn’t have enough stock. ( Phoenix Cinema is held in trust and relies on local support) we decided to deliver our own GoodGym leaflets to local neighbours but before that we went on a 5 km run along the course of the Mutton Brook. It was a relatively dry mild run except for the odd puddle. On returning some of us went into the cinema for a delicious hot chocolate and somewhat bizarrely, but appropriately, a bag of popcorn. thanks for coming, running and hopefully recruiting some new members with our leaflet drop.
Welcome to GoodGym Barnet! We're a friendly and social group who combine exercise with helping out in the local community. We meet every week to get active and do a physical task to help the charities and community organisations and projects in our area.
We will be flyering for the Phoenix cinema helping them to keep their costs down and keeping us fit. This is potentially good for both walkers and runners alike.
GoodGym is for everyone. We welcome runners of all abilities and it is often possible to walk to the task if you would prefer. We always have a back-marker so no-one is left behind - we're about achieving something together so you'll always be welcome no matter what your pace is.
Come and have a drink after the mission run at the Phoenix café.
Three runners met at the Phoenix Cinema and ran to Coldfall Woods, where we were joined by several others. The task owner, Linda, explained that our job was to dismantle some dens and use the logs and branches from them to restore the edging around the paths. Not only would this stop people from creating new paths through vulnerable bits of woodland that need protecting, it also provides a habitat for insects - which in turn will attract more birds and other wildlife to the wood.
We worked quickly in the fading light and managed several dens.
Huge apologies again to those we didn't manage to find in the woods. I'm sorry for your wasted evening - and also sorry for us that we missed out on your company and help with the task.
Coldfall Wood is a fascinating area of ancient woodland covering 14 hectares. We are looking to help with branch fencing to build barriers to protect saplings and new growth allowing it to regenerate. Or other work needed in the woodland. Meet at the entrance on Creighton Avenue and Beech Drive. (Not far from East Finchley station.) See photo map. Limited places first come basis. Social distance will be maintained throughout our visit and we will work in small teams. Hope you can run cycle or walk to the task. Gloves needed. Our contact is Linda from the friends.
Aase has already done 25 good deeds with GoodGym. Instead of doing anything else, they've used their run to go and help people that need their help; digging, lifting, scraping, clearing, planting and weeding. Stuff that makes this a better place to be.
Well done to those that volunteered that managed to assist Barnet with its vaccination program over the last month.
here is what Jackie had to say
Did my Barnet vaccine shift today. Checking people in on an Ipad at the door. Free Lucozade and hot chocolate. It used to be a running track. Now it's a mass vaccination hub.
Can’t be bad!.. A shot in the arm for Barnet!

Aase just completed a six month streak of doing missions. That’s so many bags of garden rubbish cleared and jobs done to help someone out and put a smile on their face. Give Aase a cheer to encourage them to keep up the good work.
