One Sunday morning in January, Earl the Earthworm sensed the soil vibrating and decided to go out. Maybe it was the rain? Earl was thirsty and felt he could go for a quick one in a watering hole above ground and meet some mates. What Earl didn't know was that it was a sunny day that happened to be his last day on Earth. A couple of minutes after emerging above ground, Earl was in plain sight of Robyn the Robin, who was looking for breakfast. A minute later, Earl was no more, therefore powering the circle of life.

Robyn was visiting Miss S's garden, inspecting the property market in Hounslow. She flew into the garden following the lead of a dashing estate agent, Robin the Robin, on whom she had a mild crush. The place looked very green, with plenty of hideaways and an abundance of worms. Robyn was appalled with the security of the area: the fence had a big gap which meant foxes. No way she would be comfortable nesting here!

Just when Robyn was going to leave the garden, Vivian the Vixen, lurking in the bushes, was scared off by Sevan the Man and Kash the Ma'am. Two humans, who were too noisy for Robyn's and Vivian's taste, were the reason for Earl to be lured above ground to meet his fate: Robyn the Robin. Robyn quite liked that turn of events and decided to stay for a little while to see if the humans were going to start digging. Unfortunately, all they were doing was demolishing the complex of cosy hideouts in an overgrown bush on the right side of the garden. Robyn complained about that to Robin the Robin, who assured her that those two humans wouldn't make significant progress in one day. Robyn, having a soft spot for Robin, wanted to see the outcome of the human invasion.

Humans hadn't been seen in Miss S's garden for a long time. Miss S was bed-bound and no longer able to tend to and enjoy her overgrown garden. To the animals, Sevan and Kash were intruders, like greedy developers destroying an intimate neighbourhood of thriving community and affordable housing. For Miss S, they were a hope that her garden could flourish again - in a way how humans like nature to flourish.

In an hour and a half, a big chunk of the overgrown bush disappeared into a garden waste bin, followed by brambles, loading the bin almost to the top and filling two plastic green waste bags. All of that is done with a pair of loppers and a pair of secateurs!

Throughout that time, Robyn, feeling more secure without the fox in sight, was enjoying the worms and the melodious voice of Robin the Robin, who tried to sell her the benefits of a bramble-free garden. When the humans left, she got bored and flew to another garden, hearing another robin's song.

The robins on this mission also contributed to my RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch count 😄
