No sign of any flesh-and-blood dogs out today (probably sensible enough to stay inside away from the heat) but I did pass a big picture of one.

The guy who used to sell books outside the local train station had a dog with him every day. She was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier with 3 legs called ‘Sugar.’

Historically, these dogs were set against other dogs, rats, badgers and of course bulls, and yet were considered pet and companion dogs even then.

When this Staffordshire Bull Terrier died a few years back, someone from the area put a blue plaque up on the bridge to commemorate her. Last month, both she and her owner were immortalised in a nice mural that now spans the bridge.
