Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Nicky Woodall (she/her)
😁 Lots of smiling GoodGymmers met on the dress rehearsal for the longest day of the year. There were celebrations aplenty, for Dom and Abi's civil partnership last week, Dom's incredible 600th good deed and Paul Kelly's 250th (we think that should be a recognised milestone) 🥳
🏏 We named and numbered with our favourite summertime activity (anyone for a game of cricket?!) and set off towards Holgate. Mitch led a walking group to Holgate Community Garden where they met a few additional runners. Here's what Laura had to say about what they got up to...
We raked and cleared probably 30 to 40 dumpy bags of hay between the 6 of us.
Impressive stuff 💪
🍎 Meanwhile, the rest of us headed to the deceptively-similarly-named Holgate Community Orchard. Our task was to clear everything except one tree from the area surrounding the cleared area, for raised beds to be put in in a few weeks time. There were spades for some very hard ground and saws for those braver souls, leading to some very impressive digging and sawing. One particularly stubborn root took a team of 6 (including some vitally important observers/supervisors) but grit and determination won out and it was extracted with moments to spare before the end of the task 😬
🌄 Time for a quick group photo before some 'accessible hill reps' x4 and a run back to base for Louise's yummy turnip cake with chilli sauce and then pub/home 🍻
Holgate Allotment Association are a volunteer group of allotment holders who try to make Holgate Allotments a great place to socialise and grow veg. We have an allotment plot on the boundary of our site which is unused and completely overgrown but which we think will make a lovely orchard and wildlife area with seating for the local community to enjoy. Clearing the site will be a massive task, but it's one we want to embark on this Autumn. Can you help?
