Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Redbridge runner
We had a gorgeously sunny weather for our Saturday community mission and a jog around Wanstead area. It was so lovely to see everyone turnip for the mission in Wanstead after such a long time of not being there! We were happy to see John for the first time since lockdown as well!
Let's Clear Some Air Peter, Julia and Linda all cycled to Wanstead, whilst Jenny and Dharmesh ran from South Woodford and Gants Hill respectively. Way to go, folks, making this so environmentally and physically healthy!
The Wandering Wheelbarrow The morning started with Jenny and Dharmesh meeting at South Woodford to retrieve a discarded wheelbarrow frame that Marian from Wanstead Community Gardeners group spotted and thought it would make a good planting display. On arrival our GoodGym runners discovered that a kind man already helped and loaded up the wheelbarrow into provided transport so J&D didn’t have to do it after all – it wasn’t mint to be... They were, none the less, in good spirits arriving at Wanstead House all smiles and laughter 😊. Thanks guys for making a detour!:)
I Like Big Plants And I Cannot Lie After a somewhat staggered arrival timings, we all crossed George Green to meet Wanstead Community Gardeners to help them weed a neglected patch by the wall that hides A12 passing below and plant some plants... We got on with the task!
John and James brought over plants from Corner House and were joined by Dharmesh, Sharon and Linda who potted them out at record speed! Peter, Jenny and Julia started weeding and digging over overgrown part of that corner area, discovering a fair amount of Stag Beetle Larvae that were carefully removed into a nearby overgrown patch.
Everyone did a great job in making this area of Wanstead look well, we cannot wait to see how thistle plants will look once they will have established!
Lettuce Run! The sun was out, the mood jovial and the GG runners energised to be out and about as a team so Peter, our resident Run Leader, led us on a ‘refreshing’ jog around the area to tick off some of the green spaces for the September Parks challenge. We managed 3-4km, depending which Strava record you believe hehe, and took it really easy to enjoy the sun, the company and a mini-rest at Eagle Pond, which apparently was closed off later in the day as WW2 bombs were again discovered there (according to Facebook post that Peter saw 😊). UNBE-LEAF-ABLE!
Aloe you Vera much for coming on Saturday! It was blooming marvelous! 😊
