Flower Power York is a social enterprise aiming to use the "power of flowers" to bring positive changes to people's live and mental wellbeing. They grow the flowers themselves and have built their own raised beds in a large polytunnel. Each bed is filled with lots of soil and manure, but everything now needs to move to their new home in Poppleton, including the earth. Digging up loads of soil, bagging it up and shifting the heavy bags to a truck? Sounds like a job for GoodGym!

"Phwoar look at the soil on that!" -- Leeanne

We all met up at 11am and were quickly shown what's what. The polytunnel was large with lots of beds so we split into small groups and were soon digging, shoveling soil into bags and lugging the bags outside. There was some restraint needed here, as it turns out that a 50L bag filled to the Max isn't the easiest of things to carry. About 3/4 full proved a sensible load, but that didn't stop Leeanne from filling a 200L bag to the top. If only it hadn't then turned out to have a hole in it...

Tea? Coffee? Biscuits?

Well, this was a turn up for the books. Flower Power had provided tea, coffee and biscuits, and went round taking our orders as we worked. This was a first for me, but hopefully something that Egg will take note of for future group runs. We all downed tools for a quick cuppa, then it was time to start carrying the bags of soil to a waiting flat-bed truck where Mitch did a grand job making sure they were all arranged in neat rows to his satisfaction.

We spent about an hour on the task, but the people from Flower Power were blown away by how much we had achieved in that time. It's great to be able to make such a difference!
