Amy, Garry and Sheila turned out to help the Spencer Denney Centre in Windsor. Run by Age Concern, they provide daytime activities for older residents to be able to socialise and give their carers a break. As we walked through the centre to the garden, it was ready laid-out for afternoon tea and the smell of food being prepared for Meals on Wheels was amazing. Our task was to build a compost bin out of wooden pallets, which could be used to contain the garden waste which currently was just heaped onto the ground. Garry cleared the ground to provide a level surface, whilst Amy proved to be handy with the staple gun to attach the weed-supressant membrane to the pallets, ably assisted by Sheila. Garry was adept at screwing the pallets together with the metal brackets provided and a random selection of screws. Before long we had a compost bin. Ta-da! By this time Amy had also swept up a wheelie-bin full of leaves from the patio area. We furiously transferred as much of the existing garden waste material as we could into the bin, and together with the leaves, had filled most of the space. After adding a plastic pallet onto the front, held in place with metal stakes, we left the worms to work their magic.
