Cakes are important on the lovely Ms Y’s shopping lists and as they didn’t have exactly what she wanted we debated options on the phone. This included a Madeira Cake and we both wondered whether it originated from Madeira or contained the eponymous fortified wine. The answer was neither, rather it was eaten in Georgian England with a glass of Madeira wine. Ms Y went for the cherry and sultana cake anyway.
