Back before Christmas (gosh that seems like a very VERY long time ago now), myself and fellow GoodGym Divan Angel Michelle helped to move a bed downstairs for Mrs J. Her husband,Mr W, was unwell and they were hoping he could come home and live downstairs for his final days.

Sadly, Mr W passed away, and we were asked to help rearrange the furniture back, and bring the bed upstairs again. I was joined by Arba this time, and we met on a cool evening to help Mrs J out.

It was heartbreaking to find out that Mr W never made it home. Despite best efforts, he had died in hospital, and because of the ongoing COVID situation, Mrs J had hardly been able to see him before his passing. Our hearts were broken, and we wished we could give Mrs J a big hug. Nonetheless, we knew we could help in our own way, so we came in (masked up and clean handed) to bring some sort of normality back for Mrs J, by taking the double bed back to the upstairs bedroom, and putting the sofa back in the conservatory.

I was able to recall where everything was from the previous month, and Arba and I got to work. Part one of the task was to disconnect the beds and take each divan upstairs again. I realised now that taking something downstairs was a little bit easier than bringing it back up. Something to do with gravity? Arba and I manoeuvred our way out of the conservatory, through the kitchen and to the stairs, and somehow managed to hoist the first bed up the stairs and get it in place in the bedroom again without loosing any fingers or toes, and without taking half the house down with us. Great success.

The second bed was a much easier process, and soon they were connected back together in their previous home upstairs. The mattresses came next, and with two ventures up and down the stairs again, they were reunited with the divans once more. A quick rearrangement later to make sure the right mattress was on the right side of the bed (someone didn’t know their lefts and rights...), and we were done.

The last bit was to bring the sofa back in from the kitchen to the conservatory into the space we had just cleared by moving the beds. This was easily done, and apart from the fact it was a dark January evening, it was almost like we had never come the first time round.

Mrs J was so grateful. We had done her a huge favour by moving that furniture, and, it might not have seemed much, but the time we spent there with her meant she had someone to speak to. It must be so difficult to suddenly be on your own, especially in these grim times when you can’t even have a friend over for a cup of tea (sadly we had to politely decline the offer of a cuppa). She had asked for the GoodGym details to make a donation, as she was so thankful for the help she had received from us, and we wished her all the best as we left.

It was hard to think about how awful things must have been. It’s hard losing someone you love, but having to do it alone must be devastating. Mrs J was trying to keep positive though - she was hoping to her vaccination soon, and amazingly she was still able to bubble with her 99 year old mother. It was humbling to think that what we did seemed so small and so insignificant, but made such a bit difference to that one person. It’s that light that’s keeping us going, and I can’t wait for the time we can all be reunited with our loved ones. Until then, Arba and I will just have to keep doing good!
