OMG!!! Was my reaction when I opened the back gate and saw our mammoth mission to cut the brambles back to make a clearing to Mr D’s back door. I really didn’t think we’d be able to achieve it but at least we could make a start and maybe come back and finish another day.

Mr D is disabled and it's been a while since he’s been able to do any gardening and the brambles have grown so much that he couldn’t open his back door which was a fire risk. We were told there would be tools available at the job but they were in the shed outside Mr D’s back door buried behind the 30ft tangled mess of dense brambles. But luckily Helena and I had bought some secateurs so we took it in turns to snip, snip, snip into the brambles with the 3rd man clearing and trampling them down into a manageable pile.

Before long we revealed a tree, then a hose pipe, then we realised there was a path, then another tree, then a few more household items close to the back door and finally we made it through and revealed the back door itself.

Mr D can now step out of his back door into his garden and if the worst happened he would be able to escape or the emergency services would be able to access the back of the house. As Helena said "we can tick the life changing box!" ...possibly even life saving.

We worked so hard for 3 hours but enjoyed every minute, even though we got hot, sweaty and just a bit scratched. Now all that’s left is the very satisfying job of pulling all the thorns out of the bottom of my trainers with a pair of tweezers!

If you would like to get involved in missions, and feel the warm, proud feeling of having achieved something very worthwhile which I'm feeling right now, then book an online appointment to get your docs checked here.

An absolutely brilliant mission all! The referrer of the task has got in touch and said 'What the volunteers have achieved is absolutely amazing!!' and Mr D is very happy too! The referrer is sorry that the wrong message was passed on regarding tools but an amazing mission, even without them! You should all be proud.
