Report written by Nicky Woodall (she/her)
๐16 gregarious GoodGymmers met for our group run tonight. We were inspired by Leanne's idea to combine our naming-and-numbering with our warm up, describing our favourite plant we'd grown as we ran round the car park. There were multiple childhood apple trees and strawberries alongside other interesting plant-based memories ๐
๐We set off swiftly to make sure we got to our task in good time. We were helping St. Nick's at Fulford Ings and were pleasantly surprised at how easily we found Nicola (her map co-ordinates definitely helped) ๐
๐St Nick's are creating green corridors along the river to encourage a better habitat for wildlife. The patch of land we were working on tonight is currently dominated by balsam and nettles, which is preventing anything else from growing and/or living there. Our task was therefore to start clearing said balsam and nettles. The balsam came up satisifyingly easily by hand and the nettles were scythed skillfully to create access to some of the balsam that was taking up residence among the nettles. We had dedicated areas for the cleared balsam and nettles and although systems were set up to make the task as efficient as possible, I'm not sure anyone was able to avoid the nettle stings completely ๐
๐ชWe persevered though, and cleared some pretty big areas before calling it a night and running back along the river. We stopped at Millennium Bridge for some relay-based fitness (skipping was back, by popular demand!) before heading back to CVS ๐
โ ๏ธTaskforce are having a catch up after the group run next week so if you've got any ideas or suggestions of things you'd like us to be doing differently, please let me or any of Taskforce know. Alternatively, if you're interested in joining Taskforce, now would be a great time to do so ๐
Happy Jubilee bank holiday everyone, and see you next week!
