Led by Barnet runner

10 boisterous Barnet GoodGymmers ran 6k to help the volunteers at Fitzroy Allotments.

Meeting at the Phoenix cinema, we were worried about the rain - it was heavy right up until our meeting time - but amazingly it lifted off just in time and stayed away. We were joined by new GG Barnet runner Kani, who's just moved to the area. Welcome!

Setting off for the allotments, I led us out with Hazel back marking. The allotments are in a lovely location off a private road next to Hampstead Heath, but it does involve some hill running to get there. We chose a long, slow ascent with a couple of shorter long hills once we got to Highgate Village. Everyone did brilliantly (hill runs are great practice everyone I promise) and we threw in some squats when we reached the top.

Arriving at the allotments, we were met by Ray and her volunteers. They maintain the allotments (as well as having their own plots) for around 100 local retired and disabled people. Apparently one of the users is a famous actress, but her name was kept a strict secret. A GG Barnet mystery to solve...

We quickly divided into teams. Two teams cleared weeds and nettles from overgrown paths, whilst another two pairs worked on turning over the ground in vegetable patches. The path clearing is particularly important for allotment users in wheelchairs. There was lots to do, but GG Barnet works quickly and we soon made a big difference.

Ray and the volunteers were delighted with our efforts and are already thinking about jobs we can do on our next visit. We'll be back soon I think.

After half an hours digging and chopping, we were ready to set off. We were all given an apple, all grown on the allotments (and delicious!), then we took a quick team photo and set off.

The way back to base is mostly downhill, but does involve a steep hill up from the allotments themselves. We powered up then did some calf raises while we caught our breath. Then it was a speedy run down north hill and back to base at the Phoenix.

This week's Barnet Biscuit was gingerbread men, kindly made by Eleanor.

Next week we'll be going back to the Barnet Furniture Centre.
