Lavender time of their lives; The amazing team of Goodgym runners from Peckham ran an 8km round trip this week, to valiantly support the wonderful work of Bee Urban and their Camberwell Subterranea project.

Bee-cause it's a worthy cause The journey for the task this week took the crew all the way to the basement level garages on John Ruskin Street, just opposite the Kennington Park extension, for wonderful local community heroes; Bee Urban and their Subterranea project. http://beeurban.org.uk/projects/subterranea/

This awesome project started back in 2012, when a group of fabulous local volunteers were given permission by Southwark Council to use 4 garages plus a small utility building to develop a community project; A sustainable hub for local people to learn new practical skills.

Anti-social bee-haviour, Bee gone! The garages had been derelict and closed off from public use for many years due to anti-social behavior and although the Council had planned to renew and rent out the other garages, instead they ended up supporting the project leaders to redevelop into the community hub for awesome activities, including; Hosting a regular variety of workshops on site like; Gardening, Bicycle Repair, Beekeeping, Painting, Carpentry, Plumbing and Electrical workshop/sessions, all of which contributed to the development of the site.

A hive of activity for 11 Busy Bees Now we at Southwark Goodym are fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to help these guys out in the past, so when Barnaby our host, asked for some help this cold Wednesday night, how could we refuse?

Leaf it out! To begin with the whole crew started off with a mammoth leaf scooping up session. Stuffing what seemed like 2 million leaves into bags and running them round the corner to join the mother ship of leaves on the compost heap!

Aroma-therapy Next on the agenda for a smaller group of three, was some flower bed pruning and collecting of some rather lovely smelling lavender. The tips and stalks we later found out, will be used to make lavender oil and candles. How nice!!

Re-Cycle As the others cracked on with the gardening work, a couple of the more technically minded crew, got to work in the bike workshop. The task for this Wheely motivated bunch; dismantling lots of donated bike wheels to harvest any useful parts that have the potential to be reused.

Better Bee going now. Time to buzz off After a full 40mins of action and a lot of volunteering fun, the crew sadly said goodbye to Barnaby our excellent host for the night. Keen to chase down the 4km back to base, our very own Pigeon rook to the helm, helping the team to fly back home, in the nick of time.

Ready for home, ready for food, ready for bed! But only after an evening of jolly good(gym) will and running thrills.

See you next time
