Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Sam Lefevre (he/him)
Tonight's task brought back memories of old as we were once children playing in a nursery not too long ago! Strange how the toys haven't changed much - the classics are the best!
Tonight's ice-breaker question - what was your first or favourite toy growing up? We had Mr. Snuggles (the teddy bear), tamagotchi, Bunny the rabbit (a plush toy and not a real rabbit) and Duplo
Hill Training
Emma, Emma, Katy and I met up at Old Spike Roastery for the start of our group run. Our 3k run would take us along the back roads of Peckham and up towards Grove Vale and eventually down towards Denmark Hill and Camberwell as I wanted to get some hill training in. Luckily, we did go up this route as along the way, we heard a call out in the dark - "Hey, are you GoodGym?". It was Vic, she got lost and thought we were heading to the Salvation Army on Grove Vale. Thank you Vic for coming along from Lewisham and it must have been fate that we stumbled upon each other on the group run!
Toy Meets Toy
Ooopps! Running almost ten minutes late, we made it to Salvation Army Camberwell (Corps), which acts as a baby bank and nursery during the day. Liam was waiting for us outside whilst Natalia had already met Janet inside and was showing her around the venue.
Despite the lateness, Janet had graciously prepared the tables with gloves, cloths, sponges and Dettol infused washing up buckets ready to clean and disinfect all the toys. With 50 minutes on the clock, we had to clean / disinfect all the toys from the cupboard, the play mats and the cushions, which the children use for fruit and story time.
We had a plan of action, take all the toys out of the cupboard, which the whole group got involved with. Then the system was to take the toys to the table, clean them thoroughly before setting it aside to dry in the "clean area". It was a system that worked in naturally, we started to pair up - Liam and Natalia were one team, Emma and Vic another and finally, Emma and Katy the last team. I was there just to take photos 😜😂
Amazingly, the task took up the whole 50 minutes as I was worry we were going to get the task done in no time and I would have to put everyone through a HIIT session. Save that for another time.
After we strategically put all the toys back in the cupboard, cleaned up and took our group photos, we were off! Not before thanking Janet and saying goodbye to Liam and Natalia, who were running and cycling in a different direction, respectively.
We ran most of the 2.5k together before Emma and Vic pealed off near The Rye.
Next week, we have a double Group Run. On Tuesday night, we're packing away clothes at TRAID and on Wednesday, we're flyering around Dulwich Village for Get Rid Of And Donate - GROAD.
Thank You Janet
GoodGym is all about getting fit and doing good! We praise the runners/cyclists/walkers who come to get fit and help out, but we often forget about our task owner(s) and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Janet for staying later than usual to host us. We'll be back in the new year for more!
