Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Sandy Dhaliwal
More musical puns this week as five of us returned for our weekly visit to tend the allotment plots used as therapy gardens by patients from the Maternity Unit at Wexham Park Hospital.
Diggin your scene
Since attending this task across the last two months we have all really enjoyed working on these plots and seeing them transformed and being put to good use. It's pretty satisifying seeing the vivid difference of these untouched, overgrown plots at the start of the task that are soon looking clearer of weeds and ready for patients to use.
This week was no different as our task owner Seb directed us to a brand new area to work on. Sara, Gauri, Pam and Kam certainly proved that they had been eating their spinach, successfully digging and turning extremely tough ground as I (Sandy) hacked away at the thick weeds which covered this entire patch.
Cut my life into pieces...
While chopping away, I suffered the odd sting from a pesky stinging nettle! My fellow Goodgymers had heard that a dock leaf was apparently a remedy for such an ailment and encouraged me to Google what the leaf looked like as there might be one amongst the weeds... and beleaf it or not, there were dock leaves right there in our patch! So of course, I put the theory to the test and I think it helped to calm the stings! You learn something new everyday!
At the end of the hour we managed to get half of this plot weeded and turned, and we're looking forward to returning next week to continue the makeover... hopefully suffering a few less stings in the process!
