Bog squad!

Wednesday 25th February

Written by Rachel Levick

Our latest task took us back to the Edwards Lane community Centre for the session we’d postponed from January due to illness.

We welcomed Caroline and Charlie back for their second GoodGym tasks, and also Nat who hasn’t been for a while. Joined by Leah, Matt, Nigel and Rachel, the group met Hya on arrival who set us to work on….you guessed it….painting!

Painting seems to have been the theme of this autumn and winter for GoodGym Nottingham, kick starting with our last visit to Edwards Lane back in October when we painted the sports hall. Since then, we’ve refreshed and spruced up various walls and fences in the local area. No complaints though, the group seem in their happy place with brushes and rollers in hands and the conversation and banter flows aplenty during these kinds of tasks.

This time we had the convenient job of painting the ladies’ and accessible toilets at the community centre. We split into 2 teams – pink and blue - and got to work. After an hour, we’d managed to get a large chunk of both loos done and they were definitely looking brighter and fresher, though a second coat and some neatening up is needed. Feeling flushed with success, we piled into the accessible toilet for a quick group photo.

Although we were disappointed not to be able to finish the painting, we understand that Hya’s husband will be going in to pick up where we left. Hopefully we will be back soon to help out with more jobs around the Edwards Lane Community Centre and to admire the loos if we need to spend a penny!

We're Painting the Railings Whiiiite!

Wednesday 18th February

Written by Nottingham runner

Somehow lightning has struck twice and we've not had to contend with the incessant rain on this mammoth task!

This time we were joined by Charlie on his first ever GoodGym session and Jen who we borrowed from Portsmouth for the evening. And a groundsheet to protect the stonework – whaddya know, we've learned!

With a smaller group, we clubbed together and got a good chunk further along the railings. It's really starting to look good!

We'll be back at the end of March, so sign up now. Will it be a hattrick of dry evenings?

Basement Builders

Wednesday 11th February

Sing a song of GoodGym A cupboard full of ducks Four-and-twenty steel bars Have us in a state of flux

Sort out some lost clothing Give bits to charity Not the stash of undies, though That's destined for the bin

With the lurgy taking out several GoodGymers this week, it was a motley crew of three who turned up for our first visit to The Lenton Centre. We were greeted by Angela who led us down to the basement and showed us around.

Our first job was sorting out a few bin bags of unclaimed lost property to figure out what could be donated and what had to be ditched. It turns out that more people than you'd think leave their swimmers and towels behind after a dip in the pool, and more than a fair few apparently went home commando. Once they were sorted, Tom nipped down the road to put the donatables in a BHF bin down the road, while Leah and Heidi located the outside bin for the remainder.

Next, we were off to another room of the basement to put together a shelving unit that had clearly been waiting a while for assembly. With a combination of contortion, logic and brute strength (and a couple of random gardening tools and keys), we managed to get it together and just about stable. It's currently being guarded by the giant duck full of his own plastic brethren we found in a cupboard.

Finally, we took a bit more rubbish and recycling out to the bins before heading our separate ways.

There's plenty more for us to do there, can't wait to go back!

Matt joins the Kindness Angels

Thursday 5th February

Written by Rachel Levick

A massive well done to Matt who did his 40th task last night in Nottingham. It was a bit of a last-minute call-up as we only found out about this session a few hours before, but eager to get his hands dirty once again, Matt headed into Nottingham city centre to join the Kindness Angels in handing out bags of food and supplies to people in need.

More information can be found on this Facebook post.

The Kindness Angels group has been set up with the aim of scattering kindness to those on our streets in Nottingham. They are doing a fantastic job and even featured on BBC Nottingham this week. We hope to team up with them for more events in future.

Is that paint on your hands or are you just so cold they've gone white?

Wednesday 4th February

Written by Nottingham runner

You know you've got a good bunch of GoodGymers when eight of them turn up on a windy, close-to-freezing evening in February to paint railings.

After a little bit of stalling having a look round the glorious entrance area at The Atrium, we grabbed the paint and brushes and headed outside.

We decided to split into two teams of four starting at opposite ends of the first section of gates, each with two on the outside and two on the inside in an effort to make things as efficient as possible. It's going to be a massive job (we're scheduled to come back in a couple of weeks and will likely be back a few more times as we get towards the summer), but I think we made a good start! Just look at the difference in the pics.

Belated congratulations to Khiltee on her 10th task, and shoutout to Florence for hitting a fabulous 15! An additional thanks goes to Rachel who figured out that washing-up liquid is the best way to get this kind of paint off your skin!

Sprucing up Sherwood Shops

Thursday 29th January

Written by Rachel Levick

With January coming to an end, GoodGym Nottingham squeezed in one final task, our second in two days! Our original plan was to be inside at the Sherwood Community Centre, but we had to postpone this due to illness. Instead, we took to the streets of Sherwood to do a spot of litter picking.

Leah, Matt, Rachel and first-timer, Caroline, spent the hour tidying up the litter outside the shops along both sides of Mansfield Road. There were no significant finds, other than what looked like the back of a wing mirror from a bus. Nevertheless, the team filled two bags and left feeling satisfied that the area was looking a little less littery than when they started.

The week’s doubleheader means that GoodGym Nottingham has smashed its January Challenge total with 42 individual good deeds this month. We kick off next month with a new task at the ICCA in Nottingham. Sign up here.
