Dame Emily Park cleaned by Depp-and-able Goodgymmers

Bristol Report written by Paul Becker (he/him)

Another fantastic turn out tonight as 30 of us set out on a fairly short run over to Dame Emily Park in Bedminster.

The park is cared for by the Dame Emily Park Project (DEPP), a small group of volunteers who work hard to keep the space tidy and the equipment maintained as well as hosting events for the local community.

On arrival at the park we were met by Ursula and Sarah who split us into groups and set about equipping us all with litter pickers and rubbish bags. We were then all assigned different zones of the park and tasked with clearing away all the litter we could find.

With October fast approaching the early evening light is starting to fade fairly quickly and the simple task of navigating around the park was made somewhat more challenging as a result. It was nice to see a few head torches appear and with a couple of our new lights in play we managed to carry on a little longer and finish our task.

Apparently the park had had unexpectedly been cleared early that morning so we were expecting that maybe there wouldn't be too much to do, but Goodgym runners have a real knack for finding litter so it was no surprise to finish up with over 10 full bags of rubbish by the end of our session. Amazing work everyone - DEPP really appreciated all our efforts. It was nice to have some of the skaters in the park helping out too.

Another short run and we found ourselves back at Queen Square with a lttle time to spare so we finished off with a trio of running trains heading around the perimeter. The bursts of speed required to move to the front are a good form of interval train-ing (get it?).

Finally we presented a set of red shoelaces to Kerry for brining along here sister Megan on Saturday and we promised a similar award to Abigail next time for bringing along Sophie tonight.

A very warm welcome to our new runners, Kate and Hollie. Hope you had fun!

Too Cool for the Pool

A muggy but beautiful evening in Bath for our fabulous 14 runners on a mission combined with a 4K run to A hidden gem of a heritage site at Cleveland Pools, the task was to weed to our hearts content in preparation for their Heritage open days this weekend details on their Facebook page. Well worth a visit.

A few new faces tonight, so a big shout out and welcome to Lucy and Steve on their first Goodgym run, I even had time to chat about everything Goodgym before we got started and our resident reporter arrived on time. Introductions during our warm up and headcount (we got to 7 tonight then it all went wrong) before heading to towards the canal for a mostly flat social run with a few additional bits out to our task destination.

We arrived in plenty of time and our host Sally was ready and waiting armed with tools, brushes and gloves. A brief talk on the pools history to start, it is Baths most exciting Heritage site and then it was all hands to the ground for a full 40 minutes of weeding.

Splitting into groups with sweeping and weeding around the main pool, a few eager ones jumping into the small pool (don't panic it was empty) and the remainder of us tidying the upper path area of anything that looked remotely like a weed, well that was the idea.

A few time reminders from Steph to keep us on our toes and get as much done as possible but as always another great job done in a short space of time. Of course we left a minute or two to get that group photo and thanks our lovely host Sally for allowing us to come and help.

After bidding the pools farewell we picked up the pace for a shorter run back with some looping for the front runners before arriving back at base for a stretch out and reminder to bring your ID to the next group run so you can get paired up with your very own coach.

Thank you Pascale for back marking and Joe for tonight's pun. Your all amazing people doing a great job in your community so be happy and feel proud,

"Here we go..oh..fliering all over the world" (well..Bath!)

It was a steady seven kilometres run in the summer sun with our legs eleven runners. The Group Run task in hand was to deliver Age UK pamphlets to local medical centres to inform them of the great range of activities available to older people in BANES.

Their befriending service naturally got us talking about the GoodGym Coach runs and one-off Missions. (If you'd like to be involved in these activities but haven't had your DBS check yet then let us know and we'll get the GoodGym ball rolling.)

Our run route started on Great Pultney Street where we felt the burn early on with some walking lunges, we then tricep-dipped in Twerton, perfected our push-ups and planks up in Oldfield Park and finished up with sets of sit-ups on the grassy banks of the River Avon.

We also armed ourselves with GoodGym fliers to hand out to fellow Tuesday night runners in the hope that it would encourage them join us to get fit and do good. Hopefully we'll see new faces at future runs as a result, just as the BBC Points West report inspired John S to seek us out and join our jolly ranks.

Welcome to Jaxx tonight and thanks for the details about other club runs in the area (naturally GoodGym t-shirts are compulsory clobber for these events) : Monday - 6:30pm - Sweaty Betty
Wednesday - 6:30pm - Running Bath Thursday - 7:15pm - John Moore Sports

Also there's the fabulous Bath Skyline parkrun every Saturday morning at 9:00am and often a glorious GoodGym one-off mission run later on a Saturday morning too.

Thank you all for a fun run, special thanks to John R and Mim for back marking.

And it's a fond farewell to Charles, we look forward to following your on going running adventures so send us pics showing your GoodGym T-shirt on tour. Thanks for the run pun!

Steph is back next week, meanwhile I'm off to try the Moby plank challenge to the soundtrack of 'Bring Sally Up'. Pascale

It`s the end of the path but we had a laugh

It was certainly a soggy and sad affair for our 16 Goodgym runners for part 2 out to Bathampton for the NOT SO... Dry arch growers this evening taking the 8k route along the kennet and Avon canal. Some of our runners will be saying Goodbye tonight as they graduate and move on along Life's rich path.

A very warm welcome tonight to Lara and Graeme showing they are made of Mighty stuff for their first Goodgym run with a good distance and hefty task ahead with the promise of heavy rain, they soon got stuck in and made light work of both and with a smile.

After a headcount and intro to everything good at Goodgym we headed out along the canal with a light refreshing rain to help us along our way and a chance for a re group in the shape of squats and walking lunges to get those legs nice and strong. we arrived at the task where our two lovely hosts Phil and Jan were to greet us. Steph dished out the gloves and Ali had time to change into his old shoes before the heavens opened on us, in fact it was the wettest run I've done since Westminster.

Barrows and spades galore with the team splitting into three groups Alex and Rosie starting at the far end of the Path and soon joined by the others as those barrows of bark came rolling along. Graeme taking the lead of BARROW BOYS and Hermione showing the lads what lasses are made of .... STRONG STUFF with the rest of Goodgym Bath shovelling the bark into those barrows managing to avoid covering each other in bark although it was very close at times.

Working like clockwork tonight with shuttle runs and shovelling fun along the way the team soon made light work of the task and finished the job in 25 minutes , just showing how much you can achieve in a short space of time. we even had time to leave the remaining bark chips in a tidy pile.

Time to pack up and grab a group photo along our finished path before saying Goodbye and heading back along the canal with a little bit of looping back for the energetic ones before arriving back at the leisure centre for a soggy stretch out.

Thank you all for coming tonight, you really smashed both run and task in very wet conditions. Best wishes to our students who made this their final Bath run, we couldn`t have got where we are today without you. Thanks Pascale for kindly back marking.

LETTUCE... HELP YOU !!

A beautiful evening for a nice 7k run along the canal in Bath with 15 fabulous people out to Bathampton and our task location for Dryarchgrowers, a community agriculture group and the task tonight was to remove a 40m pathway used to access the vegetable plots each side.

A very warm welcome tonight to Vito and Zoe both new to Goodgym and boy did they pick a good night to come along with a great scenic run route and a meaty task in a short space of time.

A warm up and headcount outside with Ellen kindly back marking tonight, so we made our way with no time to waste as we had a lot of distance to cover this evening. A direct run to the canal was in order through Sydney gardens as we made our way along the canal avoiding the many cyclists and runners out and about.

We took advantage of regrouping with squats, looping back and star jumps outside a pub (now that shows willpower) before the final incline up to the task destination to meet our host Phil who was super organised and soon had us working hard. I feel this is JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG (thanks Sam, gold star for you)

Just 25 minutes to dedicate on the task, initially I thought it was going to be impossible but with a lot of hard work and organisation I was soon proved wrong as the team split into four groups tackling the path from either end lifting the membrane and shovelling the top layer into wheelbarrow's and running them across to the compost heap. Like a group of synchronized swimmers we worked in pure harmony, lifting shovelling and finally carrying the path like a Chinese dragon across to the compost heap, DONE IN THE NICK OF TIME !! PHEW !!

I think our host Phil was amazed that we had finished part one of the job so part 2 will follow next week to lay the new path... YAY !! please don`t forget to sign up for this one, many hands and all https://www.goodgym.org/group_runs/dry-arch-growers-part-2

We just had enough time to grab a group photo with our LETTUCE kindly given to us (organic and all) from our lovely hosts this evening, although I have to say we had some funny looks running back carrying a lettuce in hand. The route seemed shorter on the way back and we arrived at our destination with a minute to spare for a well earned stretch out and reminder to bring your ID if you wish to be paired with your very own coach.

Thanks so much for your hard work tonight and don't forget we have a QUIZ NIGHT SOCIAL on Thursday so wear your T-shirt sign up and join us https://www.goodgym.org/parties/cider-with-rosie-social

If your into trekking, Forever friends have an awesome trek coming up to Cambodia more details here http://www.foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk/events/cambodia-trek. I would love to do this.
