Access(ible) All Areas !!

Lambeth Report written by Yianny (he / him)

What do we always say about Lambeth GoodGymers? No not that.... It's that come rain or shine they will be out getting fit and doing good in the community.

Last night we had the welcome addition of GG tourist and seasoned helper outer Lucy - great to have you along Lucy. So along with Tilly, Fi and AA Yianny we waited for Michael to set off. As Michael is always bang on time it was odd that he wasn't with us yet and it turns out someone had locked the park gates and he couldn't get in! AA went and opened the gate and that meant we could set sail for Holy Trinity.

Nicole was braving the awful rainy weather to meet us outside the church with our latest task - spreading tonnes of gravel around the parking area for the accessible bay.

While Michael and AA headed off to carry a bench down from the other end of the yard the rest if the team set about shovelling, pouring and spreading the gravel neatly around the bay. Sadly only one bag of red gravel had turned up so we didn't quite finish the bay but we did what we could and then it was time to head back.

We were soaked through, cold, numb fingered but satisfied having done a great job!

Well done to all and I look forward to seeing you next time :0)

Where You Bin? Turning Compost !!

Lambeth Report written by Yianny (he / him)

Through a light dusting of drizzle 5 Lambeth GoodGymers gathered to help Incredible Edible with their compost bin project.

We had a logistical challenge with Paul joining us walking while the group was running to the task and so trying to plan a route where we would meet at the same time while travelling at different speeds was like a primary school maths problem (Mandy is cycling at x and Billy is walking at y speed - where will they meet)..... Suffice to say AA Yianny failed the equation with aplomb!

The running group of Mark, Tilly and Michael set off from Papa's and headed towards bin number 3 with the plan being to turn the compost in that bin, bin 2 right next to it and then meet Paul at bin 1 as he arrived.

Our first challenge was that all the compost turners or 'pokers' seem to have disappeared and so we were looking for big sticks or branches to do the job with but thankfully it not being Spring yet, nature was happy to provide. After some disagreements with the padlocks and finishing the first two bins we set off to bin Number 1 only to find Paul walks very quickly and had been waiting for 10 mins :0(

We had the same issue at every bin so were always on the look out for big sticks to turn the compost and were able to get through 5 bins in total with the last one being very.... humid.

Anyway we headed back at walking pace having put in a good shift and a solid 5km of run / walking.

Big thanks to all and see you at the next one!

Let's (Thames) Reach Higher!!

Lambeth Report written by Yianny (he / him)

The sun was smiling on this new partnership between GoodGym and our friends at Two Circles as we met in South London to head out and help out Thames Reach (TR), a London-based charity working with those suffering from homelessness.

Thames Reach’s mission is to help people who are homeless or vulnerable to find decent homes, build supportive relationships and lead fulfilling lives. The Bermondsey Project provides temporary, supported accommodation. Staff work alongside mental health professionals to support vulnerable individuals.

The main part of the group met at Paterson Park and then the quicker runners and cyclists headed over with AA Mark (GoodGym Bromley) to Aberdour Court centre while the remaining group came with AA Yianny to Roseberry Street and Galleywall Street centres.

Our job was simple but satisfying, help weed, clear, litter pick, mow and lop until the outdoor spaces were like new! The two groups with Yianny got through an amazing amount of work (and a fair bit of banter) and both Elvis and Tommy from TR were absolutely delighted. (check out the pics to see just how much)

A big thank you to all the volunteers and hope you all enjoy the evening as you retreat to the pub for a well deserved drink and rest.

Going Back to Our Roots - Bramble Bashing at Horsenden Farm !!

Ealing Report written by Yianny (he / him)

It may not have been a sunny day today but at least the rain held off and so it was that GoodGym and Brompton Bicycles teamed up once again to take a new cohort of new-starters off for a bit of getting fit while doing good!

The group was of an intimate size this time round with 3 eager and willing volunteers along with AA Yianny back for another session. Adam, Dilara and Byron were ready and waiting with bikes at the ready and we were off for a scenic ride down the canal from Brompton HQ to Horsenden Farm - which we all know is the home of the famous Gruffalo....

Alongside the Gruffalo and all his companions Horsenden Farm has some lovely cows (good friends of ours by now) and those cows are going to be set to graze on a reclaimed meadow on the hill, but in order to do that the team at the farm need to clear it from the trees and brambles that have taken over. That's where we came in. Our job was chop, lop, saw, rake & gather all of the wood and bring it over to build a 'dead hedge'. The natural hedge will not only help to keep the cows safely within their pasture but also provide a perfect and ginormous bug and wildlife hotel.

And so we had a solid 90 minutes of hard work ahead of us but also a nice chance to chat with such a small and committed group.

Take a look at the photos (photogenic bunch these Brompton folk!) to see the hedge growing throughout the task.

At the end of our time we dropped off our Wellies - so glad to have those - and our gloves and cycled back the other way back to base in time for lunch.

Thank you so much Adam, Dilara and Byron for helping out, Elsa from the farm was delighted, and see you next month Brompton.

Feeling Vine in Ivy's Garden !!

Lambeth Report written by Yianny (he / him)

This evening's run was looking like a soggy affair a few hours before but fortunately the weather gods were smiling on us - not only was it dry and clear but bordering on warm as well. Has Spring sprung?

Our regulars Mark, Tilly and Michael met at Papa's with Jo scheduled to meet us on our way to Holy Trinity. This evening's category was favorite fiction book with shouts for Life After Life, Devil in a Blue Dress, The Count of Monte Cristo and non fiction History of Britain.

After a nice 4km flat run to HT we were met by Nicole and Adam alongside James (Father Nature) who was taking us through the planting of an Apple Sunset tree in a giant tractor tyre. First up the group needed to wade into the mud to level the tyre itself and then fill it with loose bricks and big rocks and then the fun really began. It was soil shiftin' time with many barrow loads of soil being loaded at the bottom of the hill and then run up the track to the tyre to fill it.

The group did a great job with many tens of barrow loads coming up the hill then being unloaded into the tyre which left only one thing to end the session - to plant Ivy's new apple tree! What a lovely moment to end the session on. Check out the photos and we can't wait for the summer party to enjoy the outdoor space and welcome in the new hall.

Thanks to all and see you next time :0)

What the Fox?!

Lambeth Report written by Yianny (he / him)

We are back folks! A great turnout last night for our Group run after a few sparse weeks and we were heading over to help Father Nature (James to his friends!) with the Lavender Maze in Max Roach Park.

An all too familiar story for AA Yianny who is crocked again and wasn't able to run to the task so had to hobble across but never fear we had Louise and Michael who were able to lead a fast loop up to Stockwell and then back down the Brixton road to the park with Mark. We would also like to wish Mark a big Happy Birthday for his Bday this week - another year younger and if like me no wiser at all ;0)

Once we had all arrived at Max Roach we were met by our resident walkers, Jo, Paul and Marie-Noelle as well as James and our task was to weed and clear all the invasive species that were muscling in on the lavender in the maze. it was absolutely wonderful to see how the maze is looking now and we can't wait for some sunny spring days to get a real look at it in full bloom.

With our kneeling boards, hand tools and plenty of fingers in soil we managed to clear the whole maze of weeds and leave it looking tip top while also allowing the lavender to grow free of intrusion.

Just after 8pm we were done and packed up and our walkers and Mark headed home, Louise and Jo were off to do a reccy of the Effra social for the London GG April social (details available soon), while AA and Michael made our way slowly back to Papa's - sorry Michael!

Big thanks to all and see you next week.
