It's in the Bag!

Fri 3 Jun
Report written by Sheila Attenborough

Georgeta, Anita, Rachel and Sheila answered the call to support local charity Baby Matters in their initiative to supply refugee families with essentials such as shoes and clothing. The task was to check that donated items were clean and not too worn, and then sort into size. This was in preparation for the following day, when refugee families currently staying in a local hotel would be coming to select items for themselves. We started by sorting the men's clothing, and then were tasked with bagging up and labelling the pre-sorted childrens clothing according to gender. We had some interesting discussions about how gender-specific some clothes were! For a while we were joined by Melissa, one of the refugees from El Salvador, and although her English was limited (and our Spanish non-existant) it was interesting to hear from her about her family and life at the Holiday Inn. The boxes of clothes to bag up just kept coming - just as we thought we had it in the bag, another box would appear. We were fed and watered by the catering team as we worked. Well done to everyone for staying on far longer than intended, until the job was done. At the end we had a long line of neatly-sorted bags of clothes, all ready for the following day. Great work, team!

One, Two, Tree

Tue 31 May
Report written by Sheila Attenborough

After some rather changeable weather, Jen, Jess and Sheila turned up to Vale Road Cemetery in Windsor, prepared in wet-weather gear. The intrepid trio had come to continue the good work started on a previous community mission. There we met taskowner Sue, who had been working there since late afternoon as well as Helen, a local councillor. We were quickly set to work. Jess was moving large branches from one end of the site to another, whilst Jen and Sheila were picking up small branches and sticks from the ground, to enable the mower to pass through safely. Luckily the area was sheltered by trees and the weather cleared up very quickly. Sadly, there has also been fly-tipping of garden waste onto the site. We then moved on to clearing the leaf litter from the beds along the fence. As the end of the session approached, Jess, Sheila and Sue rose to the challenge of each filling a bag in the final 4 minutes, and another 3 bags were added to the pile. We tried to count the total number of bags filled, but each came up with a different answer, so we can confirm that the result is somewhere between 26 and 30 . It was the end of a long day!

The Bat Defectives

Sat 28 May
Report written by Sheila Attenborough

Georgeta, Kanika and Sheila cycled along the Jubilee River to join Clara, Peter, Julian and Jen at St John's church in Eton Wick, where we met with taskowner Claire from Wild Eton Wick. Claire had two tasks for us today. We started off by searching for any bat activity inside the church. We knew from previous surveys that bats fly around the churchyard. But could we find any evidence of bats roosting? We were looking for droppings, insect wings , urine stains or even bats themselves. We spread out throughout the church, armed with torches, and were given permission to have a good rummage in all the nooks and crannies we could find. We found plenty of dead insects and cobwebs, and Jen even found a mouse (of the toy variety), but we couldn't find any direct evidence of bats. Disappointingly we didn't have the key to go up the bell turret and steeple, as we felt this may have been our best chance of finding evidence of bats We then moved outside to enjoy the sunshine and see whether we could see any butterflies in the churchyard. Whilst on butterfly watch some of us had a bit of a contemplate about the stories that may lie behind the gravestones, a very peaceful place. A few butterflies were spotted - some of them whizzed by very quickly, but Georgeta managed to get a picture of a common blue. In all, 9 butterflies were recorded - other species seen were a meadow brown, a gatekeeper, and a holly blue. We were all agreed that the churchyard could be improved to make it more attractive to butterflies and perhaps that will be an eventual outcome from this survey! We made the most of the weather and all took the scenic route home again. Thanks to Claire for hosting us, and we look forward to helping out again soon.
