Digger-nometry

Huddersfield Report written by Saul Muldoon

There were plenty of diggers for today's GoodGym task, both the human and mechanical kind.

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) the latter were not available for our use, so we set about with picks and spades to continue with our ongoing mission to clear the Riverside Way of the dumped soil and rubble that have been blocking it for a number of years.

And what progress we made! A couple of hours of picking and shoveling saw the path re-instated over a distance of about ten metres. Great work from today's team of Louise Galvin, Ben Godfrey, Tom, Thom Wood, SallyAnn Maish and Robert Armitage. Top effort folks, today's task masters Jeff and Kim from Greenstreams pronounced themselves very impressed with our work. There is of course always more work to be done on the Riverside Way and we'll be returning later in the summer for another session.

Turf’s Up!

Huddersfield Report written by Saul Muldoon

Another Saturday morning of lifting turf at Golcar Park, with GoodGymmer SallyAnn Maish, along with Matt and Marion from Golcar Environment Group.

Lots of digging, wheel-barrowing and sweeping saw us clear another large section of grass making a much more attractive flower bed.

Well done all....thats it with cutting turf for now, Matt has promised us another ginnel to clear next time we visit Golcar.

Axe Murderer

Huddersfield Report written by Saul Muldoon

Today we killed a pick axe....and broke a spade. But on the positive side we also cleared a section of the Riverside Way that had been buried in soil and rubble for the last few years.

It was a tough job, shifting tons of rocks and earth but as ever GoodGym were up for the challenge. Today's crew comprising Tom, Thom Wood, Louise Galvin, Zena Whalley, Sally Ann-Maish and myself spent a very productive two hours shoveling soil and removing rubble (whilst also enjoying the spring sunshine) to reveal the route of the long lost Riverside Way.

Thanks to our efforts Riverside ramblers no longer need to negotiate the tricky tree routes on the water's edge but can instead safely pass along the newly cleared path.

That's not to say the task is entirely finished, there is still more digging to be done as the route requires widening but we'll save that for another time. But in the meantime today's crew can certainly take credit for a good job well done.

Turf Serfs

Huddersfield Report written by Saul Muldoon

Cutting turf is a tough task, but that was GoodGym Huddersfield's job for Saturday morning. We were helping Golcar Environment Group remove a grassy area in the village park in order to create a more interesting flower bed area.

So spades in hand, Kati Law, Louise Galvin, Heather Wilshaw Jones, Catherine Gormley and SallyAnn Maish set about cutting whilst I ran up and down with the wheelbarrow removing and stacking the sods at the opposite end of the park.

Two hours later, much effort expended, a few biscuits eaten and plenty of chatting done, we had completely removed all the turf from the designated area. There is however still more digging to be done, and now we have proved ourselves as excellent turf cutters GoodGym will be returning to Golcar again in the coming weeks to continue cutting.

Thanks to everyone for your help this morning, another great GoodGym task completed.
