Manor feel like a wildlife meadow

Bristol Report written by Danica Priest (She/her)

A group of us attended Manor Woods Valley group’s regular volunteering session to clear scrub from a wildflower meadow. It was lovely to see some cowslips and native daffodils already blooming on what they call the ‘Rabbit Field’. We had a first time Goodgymer today so well done to Nell for your first task! We cleared a massive site which was satisfying to see the progress made. Don’t worry there’s still plenty of scrub left for nesting birds. After the task was finished we were treated to some Manor Woods Valley apple juice made from the apples we helped harvest last year.

Hyacink we did well today

Bristol Report written by Phill Stone

We had a fantastic turn out at the berry maze this weekend, with 9 goodgymers rocking up to help Barney and Jackie at the berry maze. Only due to some last min issues arising, there was no Barney or Jackie! They left me some instructions and given how well we've been taking care of the place, they had faith we'd do okay without their weed identifying powers.

We had some lovely spurts of sunshine accompanied by some great goodgym chatter, and within one hour we managed to de-weed a good third of the maze. We also settled a debate I've been wondering about for a long time, as I had been mistaking bluebells for Hyacinth(don't ask), so thanks to David and his wonderful AI App skills for working that out!

Props to Emma who not only managed to mow the majority of the maze in one session, but did a great job of rescuing some bulbs that that started to grow in to the path. Nice one!

Also, we welcomed some new goodgymers to the berry maze, thanks for coming Nadia and Arron! Loved that you both got stuck in. Arron has also suggested that we named the unofficial berry maze mascot 'Horace the horse' whicjh I'm on-board with.

Cheers everyone! There's another berry maze session later this month, check it out here

We had an Appetite for De(con)struction

Bristol Report written by VaguelyNorthernDarren

6 runners and 5 walkers mainly swam to The Southville Centre on a very soggy, dark and dreary night, even the Bristol Light Festival rarely pierced the gloom, but did that stop us!?...

Well, after arriving, Ru the Receptionist (not related to Rue the Day) showed us the kids' play deck that needed deconstructing, and the notes included a request to sweep and weed outdoors. 11 hardy GoodGymmers bravely volunteered to remain indoors while Caroline, Marianne and report-writer Vaguely Northern Darren had the easy job of sweeping and weeding in the glorious evening sky full of hydrating rainfall!

The indoors people did as much as they could with the most mis-matched set of Allen keys they could find, and what looked like a child's screwdriver set from the 1980's. 'We did as much as we could with the time available, and at least no one had to go to A&E' were the words I think summed up the night and I wonder if Dave has returned with his 'proper toolbox' to finish the job?

We polished off the night by drying out at a local vegetarian Chinese restaurant for February's GoodGym Eats, arranged by Alice this time now Clo has moved a bit further away.. And we'd turned up soaking wet last time we were there, too!
