In and Out - no messin' about
On arrival there were already patients waiting outside the church, but vaccinations were not due to start until 3:30 - people were understandably keen! So I thought this is going to be a busy shift.
We were well stocked on volunteers so i started out the front with Paul. Paul armed himself with the hand sanitiser and between us we directed people into the church. We found we were kindred spirits with an admiration for Greta Thunberg and the environment, so time passed very quickly.
I was then moved inside to the surgery waiting room, however it was kinda empty... turns out with the Oxford jab you don't need to wait 15 minutes unless you drove, so most people were walking straight out. I then realised that the church was not busy either because if no-one waits at the end there isnt a queue so patients were literally able to walk straight in through the church, vaccinated and straight back out again!
I met back up with Paul for the last hour at the back of the church where I also met Eddie. Paul and Eddie had been stationed at the back of the church for most of the shift, but were quite happy to do so, taking it in turns to escort people across the car park to the centre. Alot of people coming for vaccinations this time were front line workers.
The three of us made good company for each other and it was lovely to get to know them both - however i must confess that i hadn't really registered that they were both on the task as GG volunteers. It was also Eddie's first volunteer - so I hope my general chatting made up for my lack of official GG welcome... and also my complete lack of a photo 😯
If i had taken a photo it would have been a selfie of the three of us, standing in the dark, with a smile on our faces (our eyes would let you know we were smiling). Really looking forward to volunteering with Paul and Eddie again 😊😊😊

Paul has helped keep other people motivated, Paul has noticed what others have done and cheered 10 people. We doff our caps to you Paul.

Choose A Chair, Any Chair
Back to the Vaccine Clinic today and I had a change of job! I was to ferry patients from the Treatment rooms to the waiting room for departure or 15 minute wait. The patients were all given the Astra Zeneca (Oxford) vaccine which wouldn't normally require a 15 minute wait. However, anyone driving or cycling was nevertheless asked to sit down to make sure they were quite all right before leaving the surgery. Paul, my fellow Goodgym volunteer was back at the Church, so we didn't see much of each other at all. I nipped across to get a photo of him and Gail whilst they were ferrying patients across to the surgery. You can just about see them. I was able to observe how much work the nurses had to put in to get the patients through and out - new patient, new gloves, quick health check, apply the vaccine, run through potential side-effects, say goodbye, clean chair, repeat. They get through a lot of equipment, and I loved that they seemed to have colour coordinated their gloves with their scrubs, blue or purple. There was alot of laughter all afternoon which was lovely to hear and all the patients clearly very happy to get the vaccine protection - each of the patients got an 'I've had my covid vaccination' sticker. We saw a lot of NHS staff in today from Southern Health Hampshire, so lots of different people being invited to attend the clinic. When I took the patients to the waiting room, they were able to pick any chair to sit and wait their 15 minutes, the nurses had marked the time of when the vaccine was given, and they just needed to watch the clock. I was working alongside Anabel who was a HIVE volunteer, Jane and Emma who are affiliated to the surgery group. The time as usual went really quickly and it was soon time to tidy and clean the areas ready for tomorrow's clinic and go on home. It had been raining quite heavily so my cycle home was a very wet but refreshing ride home. Job satisfaction definitely high.
