U Can't Cwtch This

Cardiff Report written by Michael

With a bit of rain threatening to run today we were hopeful that it would stay away enough for the task to be a success. Not to be put off, we decided that rain or shine - you can't touch this!

8 goodgymers today split into three groups, we had ourselves a couple of cyclists, a couple of walkers (honestly we didn't just pick people off the street on the run), and finally 4 runners. Today was also a SPECIAL farewell run for Nicholas who was off to pastures new at the end of the week.

"Best of Luck Buddy"

Within no time at all we had arrived at the task, after chatting about our lovely bank holiday weekends and the adventures that we had over the days.

Our task tonight was to help out at the wonderful Cwtch Together, they had been hit by the great force of nature and needed some helpful volunteers to clear up. Cwtch Together is a disability play project held in the centre of Cardiff which promotes inclusive play and socialisation for disabled children and their families. It's therefore important that the ground outside is nice and can be used as much as possible.

Our Tasks

  • Clear the leaves (as much as possible)

  • Remove any stingy things

  • Weed in between the paving

  • Move the bags of slate over to the stepping stone area

"No time to natter, let's get busy"

Everyone was busy today, spreading out over the ground to do their work. Leaves were flying, 'some' people were getting carried away with the weeding devices.....and the brave few took to picking the nettles. How do you pick a nettle? Very carefully!

It was soon time to put the tools away, quickly show our lovely host for the day Sarah what we had done and plan a return trip soon. It was great to be back at Cwtch, it had been quite a while since we'd been here putting up the sheds.

Taught it, Sort it, Bought it....

Cardiff Report written by Michael

Not the Start to Spring that we had last week as a wet weathered Wales emerged from the grey evening sky.

Not to be beaten by the rain, 8 eager goodgymers stayed strong and committed to the cause, and tonight that would be the wonderful YMCA shop on Colchester Avenue.

For those taking on the full run - a nice 7km, with our usual relaxed start closer to the task and a lovely 1 mile.

Lots to talk about tonight with Easter break just around the corner and for most a luscious long weekend, an opportunity to see family and friends in some (hopefully) better weather. Once at the task there was just enough time to rehydrate - Always important when being active, and now to get our volunteer muscles worked out. We had three tasks on the go,

  • A load of new records to sort
  • A library of books to arrange and sticker
  • The usual sorting of donations ready to transfer to the other shops in Cardiff

Hannah was first to jump straight at the books, with three jobs on the go. If the books could be sold, then a YMCA sticker went on ready to be added to the library of books with a great deal of 6 for £1...

Andrew and Karolina were our 'record breakers' getting to work on the cage of records to be sorted, some reminders of the past in there.

Finally, the rest of the group hit the donation tables. Four cages of bagged donations to get through, with sanitiser and gloves ready and after a quick talk through, we were off. Anything that was not good enough for resale was bagged up for recycling with as little waste as possible.

The time went as quickly as ever and it was soon time to stop, but not before a quick bit of time to SHOP. A few items purchased and a quick group photo and we were off, returning to the city. Not the Start to Spring that we had last week as a wet weathered Wales emerged from the grey evening sky.

Harping around

Cardiff Report written by Michael

Tonight we had an opportunity to get a good run in for our task, SEVEN goodgym volunteers met to take to the streets and distribute flyers for Oasis.

Catrin Finch, from Llanon on the west coast of Wales, is the most gifted classical harp virtuoso of her generation, grounded in prodigious early achievements and intense classical training, and serving as Royal Harpist to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales in her early twenties. Catrin has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras; she has also achieved chart success with her number 1 rendition of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, and has recorded for the world’s leading classical labels.

After Catrin had heard about the support that Oasis offer refugees and asylum seekers in Wales, she kindly offered to run a fundraiser event for them. Oasis Cardiff and Oasis One World Choir are honoured to invite Catrin to The Gate for a performance for the local and wider community.

We all met outside our usual start / end location - Sport Wales National Centre, and enjoying the sunshine and the fact that we were starting in the light we made our way through the local park. Over Bridges, up steps, it was a nice workout making our way to the Gate (A lovely community Centre for varied performances and art exhibitions). A quick photo check and time to split up the leaflets, runners all heading off in different directions to look work up some encouragement for what looks to be a great event.

Once all the flyers were gone, we got together and made our way back. This time we had to head through town, making our final run a little longer - but that's the point of our Tuesdays, active travel, volunteering and fun with friends.

Come join us next week!

Plog on Player

Cardiff Report written by Michael

Just a smaller group tonight as the Weather forecast predicted a downpour, but never to be beaten we were ready to go. We met outside the Sport Wales National Centre, first hiding from the rain as we caught up on our shenanigans, then once we had all arrived we got on our plogging gloves and got our bags ready.

Michael was the dedicated spotter light for the rubbish as we ran through the park, clearing cans, plastic and rubbish, a brush head amongst a few things.

It was a shorter time than usual as the run was also the task, and as the rain got heavier so too did the litter bags. In what felt like no time at all, running up and down the cycle lanes, up and down some banks, we had filled two bags to the brim.

Lucky we were by a bin

Bags dropped for pick up and just enough time for a quick photograph before heading back to the start and then warming ourselves in front of the fire with some food.

Star Drawers: Return to the Shed-Hi

Cardiff Report written by Michael

Tonight 14 goodgym lovelies returned to inside tasks for the first time this year - oh the joy of warmth......

But first - came the active travel, two groups left our starting point walking and running to the Samye Foundation. We had already started tasks there last month so this was our return trip to hopefully finish them off, and finish them we did.

As we arrived, the water was on it's way out to quench our thirsts. We took the opportunity to have a natter until the walkers joined us, whilst Lorraine and Michael got the wonderful whiteboard ready.

Our task list was ready - let's get reading and choose our task!

  1. Make space in the shed for the chest of drawers
  2. Finish painting the shed
  3. Vacuum the stairs
  4. 8 people to take apart and carry down the chest of drawers.
  5. Also carry down white wooden panels and any other misc items
  6. Take curtain poles and whiteboard up to attic
  7. Remove net curtains from the outside gazebo
  8. Weeding by the front gate

After some discussion, we split into our groups and got to work on the tasks, quickly removing anything that we needed from the shed before the keen painters got to work. The weeding started out the front, with more joining as other tasks were completed - like the curtains down from the gazebo.

The removal group moved the drawers, chest and all misc items like a flash - filling Lorraine's car ready to move before then starting on cleaning the stairs.

And, just as quickly as we had started - it was time to finish. Lorraine had put on some lovely vegan nibbles for everyone and it was nice to be able to chat for a bit before heading back and stretch out after our run.
