Litter clean up on Gleadless Road

Mon 12 Jul 18:30 pm
Gleadless Medical Centre, 636 Gleadless Road , Sheffield, S14 1PQ
Keeping our city clean

Iren from Gleadless Valley litter pickers has asked us back to clear littering either side of Gleadless Road between the medical centre meet up point down towards Heeley Green. It's a heavily littered roadway that they have done their best to clear in the past but it's building up again and we could really do with our help. We will be concentrating on the pathways and green spaces either side of the roads.

Iren will bring litter pickers and bags, but you may wish to bring your own gloves. Meet at the task at 6.30, or if anyone fancies a jog up the hill beforehand, we can meet at U-Mix at 6pm, hitting up a few beat boxes on route

Sod it and fork it over

Fri 2 Jul
Report written by Rachel Ripley

This Friday night was a very successful mission with Friends of Crookes Valley Park. Goodgymmers turned up with enthusiasm in spades. James and Abi took the opportunity to run laps of the lake, whilst Michelle and Celine went for a swim before the task.

We welcomed new members David and Emily and were joined by a couple of friends of CVP before getting the task briefing from Simon. We were to prepare an area for perennial meadow flowers.

We headed to a freshly strimmed patch and proceeded to make hay while the sun shined. Then the turf work really began: removing the the top layer of grass and soil with spades. We collected up the sod piles and then worked to dig it over with forks ready to sow seeds.

It was sweaty work and we all got our fitness session for the day! Having made a splash, a few of us jumped back in the lake for another dip and/or headed up to the pub overlooking the lake to toast what we had managed to achieve 🍻

Maintaining the Meadow at Crookes Valley Park

Fri 2 Jul 18:00 pm
Crookes Vallley Park, off Dam House Lane, Mushroom Lane, Sheffield, S3 7NZ
The meadows will enrich the enjoyment of this very well-used park which attracts a wide range of people including families with children, runners, swimmers,. The meadows also provide a rich habitat for pollinating insects.

Friends of Crookes Valley Park have requested our assistance to work on "Penny's meadow". A well used location by GG runners and swimmers alike, I'm sure we'd all like to give back!

Jobs will be to remove turf and weeds, cultivate, rake and sow with seed provided. We can do some litter picking too if necessary.

Bring your own gloves and bring your swim stuff if you fancy a dip before or after 🏊‍♀️

SWINGS & ROUNDABOUTS

Mon 28 Jun
Report written by Andrew Waters

11 of Sheffield's finest couldn't resist the lure of wood chipping in the rain at Heeley People's Park.

Within the hour we had shovelled, carried and raked a substantial quantity of wood chip and covered a large section of garden.

Rob then told us how GG Sheffield's efforts and hours of work before the pandemic had helped them get funding for new additions to the playground. Something we can all be proud of.

Without a moment's hesitation we of course had to try out the swings, roundabout and slide and can confirm that they are - to quote Bill & Ted - most excellent!
