Food Waste Warriors

Sat 2 Oct
Report written by Chris

A group of Goodgymers visited City Harvest to help sort donated food into boxes for distribution, and even wiped a few of the boxes that got caught in the rain! A very rewarding morning and was great to return to City Harvest.

Help sort surplus food and fight against food waste with City Harvest

Sat 2 Oct 10:00 am
Unit 8 Acton Park Estate, Acton, W3 7QE
Be a food waste warrior and help feed people who need it

Time for our monthly community mission to help City Harvest!

WHAT IS CITY HARVEST?

City Harvest helps put surplus food to good use in a sustainable way by distributing to organisations around London that feed the hungry. By volunteering with City Harvest for a couple of hours on your weekend, you will make a direct positive impact on thousands of vulnerable people in London. Because of your efforts, these people - who face obstacles including food poverty, homelessness, domestic abuse and the need to flee from their homelands – will have access to a nutritious meal. The food that is rescued would have gone to landfill where it would have released harmful greenhouse gases as it decomposed. So your days’ work will make a tremendous difference to both people and the planet!

WHAT TO EXPECT

For the task you'll be volunteering as a warehouse assistant where you will help unload food deliveries, sort food, check food, and do other general warehouse jobs to help in the day-to-day running of City Harvest.

Please dress sensibly for the day as it will involve lifting and organising trays of food. Wearing closed shoes is advisable. We will provide you with high visibility jackets and any other safety clothing.

WHERE TO MEET

The site is in Acton (Unit 8, Acton Park Industrial Estate, Acton, W3 7QE) and as always with GoodGym we encourage you to use the power of your legs to get you there! Upon arrival, please make your way onto the industrial estate and follow the signs to Unit 8. The main entrance is via Eastman Road off of The Vale.

The task is set from 10am-12pm so please stay for as long as you can, you if want to come a bit earlier they are there for volunteers from 9am!

Help move essential food stock from The William Hobbayne to The Store Cupboard

Fri 9 Apr 17:00 pm
THE William Hobbayne Centre , St Dunstan's Road, London, W7 2HB
Be part of the team helping to get this community affordable food project off the ground

This Friday we need a few helping hands to help move all the essential food stock currently being held at The William Hobbayne Centre over to The Store Cupboard - Hanwell’s new affordable food project.

Tasks will be:

  • Walking trollies of food between the two sites (about a 0.2 mile walk between)
  • Lifting and sorting
  • Loading/unloading cars

Read more about The Store Cupboard here.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Disposal gloves will be provided but it's essential that everyone taking part wears a mask for the entire task so please bring your own.

  • Meet outside The William Hobbayne Centre at 5pm

  • We'll be there for 1-2 hours but hopefully we’ll get it done fast!

If you have a car it would be great if you fancy driving down and using it to help transport some stock between the sites. We’ll help load/upload it all!

DRIVERS, CYCLISTS AND WALKERS NEEDED! Help us to deliver packs of essential food for EAP

Thu 8 Apr

Ealing Alternative Provision provides education for young people who are unable to follow their education in the mainstream setting. They are supporting a few local families with food parcels and are looking for volunteers to help deliver them on Thursday lunchtimes.

Please note: They are working with The William Hobbayne Charity to sort and supply the food so parcels will be collected from there and NOT the school

This Thursday they have 6 families that need delivering and we need as many people as possible to help out

Option 1: 1.6 miles - drop off near Hanwell Community Centre to a family of 5 - Ideally three walkers / cyclists working together

Option 2: 4.2 miles - drop off near Cayton Green Park (Greenford) to a family of 4 - Ideally two cyclists working together or a driver

Option 3: 4.2 miles - drop off near Rectory Park to a family of 5 - Ideally three cyclists working together or a driver

Option 4: 3.7 miles - drop off near Northala Fields to a family of 3 - Ideally two cyclists working together or a driver

Option 5: 3.2 miles - drop off near Southall Recreation Ground to a family of 5 - Ideally three cyclists working together or a driver

Option 6: 2.8 miles - drop off near Manor House Grounds to a family of 4 - Ideally two cyclists working together or a driver

Once you've signed up please comment below which parcel(s) you are able to deliver, if you can be flexible that would be amazing! Please only sign up if you can commit to one of the above locations.

Instructions:

  • Parcels should be collected from The William Hobbayne Centre on Boston Road between 11:30am and 1pm

  • June will be there to meet you

  • You'll be given the confidential full address of the family to deliver to, please let them know which option you have signed up for

  • You'll then head out and drop off the parcels at the doorstep of the address you've been given and knock to ensure the family know that the parcel has arrived

  • Any problems with deliveries call the school 0208 991 8570 or contact Ellen on 07908170934

The parcels are quite large make sure you're happy to carry the items and definitely bring a big large rucksack to carry them, especially if you're cycling.

Any questions, drop me an email to olivia@goodgym.org

Once we have the right number of sign ups, I'll send you a confirmation email.

Wardrobe and pieces

Fri 28 Feb
Report written by Abi Perrin

Mrs W and her family had a lot of furniture and boxes to sort through after moving to a much smaller flat. To help with this big job, Abi and Remi set about helping Mrs W's son reassemble a massive wardrobe whilst Madiha helped Mrs W move and sort some boxes. They were very welcoming to us and were really grateful for GoodGym's help getting started with this task and for tackling the heavy lifting.
