Knock your box off

Richmond Report written by Lucy Hill

Mr R had had a bit of a tough time of late, and amongst everything else, he had been seriously unwell and had major surgery, and then been forced to move out of his previous property. Luckily, he had found a new place to live, however had lost a lot of his belongings and was basically starting from scratch in his new flat.

Beth and I had been tasked with helping Mr R move some furniture and boxes in his new place, to help him get settled in. Mr R had a lot of stories, and despite the awful time he had had, his friend had salvaged some of his valued possessions - beloved books and special ceramics, which were in big heavy boxes in the bedroom. Mr R, following his recent hospital stay, wasn’t in a state to be able to shift these cardboard cartons.

Our first job was to move a very heavy and delicate dresser across the room. Luckily for us the dresser was able to be split into two (although still very heavy and delicate) parts. Using our best squats and avoiding squashing any fingers, Beth and I relocated the furniture, and moved on to job number two. This involved more teamwork, in moving heavy boxes filled with books from the bedroom to the living room. Simple enough, but we had the added challenge of some dodgy doorstops, so had to try and avoid doors shutting on us as we passed!

Mission completed? Not quite yet. From one type of box to another, Mr R had mentioned that he was struggling to get his telly working. He had got himself a new EE box and a Netflix account but was not able to use it! Beth had never thought of herself as a techno whizz before, but pressing a few buttons, and sticking a few cables in the right holes, Mr R soon had access to 139 channels, and his shiny new Netflix app!

We ticked all the boxes, and a very rewarding mission was completed.

Access(ible) All Areas !!

Lambeth Report written by Yianny (he / him)

What do we always say about Lambeth GoodGymers? No not that.... It's that come rain or shine they will be out getting fit and doing good in the community.

Last night we had the welcome addition of GG tourist and seasoned helper outer Lucy - great to have you along Lucy. So along with Tilly, Fi and AA Yianny we waited for Michael to set off. As Michael is always bang on time it was odd that he wasn't with us yet and it turns out someone had locked the park gates and he couldn't get in! AA went and opened the gate and that meant we could set sail for Holy Trinity.

Nicole was braving the awful rainy weather to meet us outside the church with our latest task - spreading tonnes of gravel around the parking area for the accessible bay.

While Michael and AA headed off to carry a bench down from the other end of the yard the rest if the team set about shovelling, pouring and spreading the gravel neatly around the bay. Sadly only one bag of red gravel had turned up so we didn't quite finish the bay but we did what we could and then it was time to head back.

We were soaked through, cold, numb fingered but satisfied having done a great job!

Well done to all and I look forward to seeing you next time :0)

A spin around the block

Richmond Report written by Liz (She/her)

Not a task for the faint-hearted this evening as we headed to Lynde House Care Home to brush the windows free of any cobwebs and spider nest sacs, ready for lots of visitors over the Easter break!

We met at Tap Tavern ready for action with both a running group and walking group setting off over the river to the home. Feather dusters and brooms were the tools for the night, as well as some good creeping shoes for treading lightly around the residents' windows as they settled in their rooms! We worked around the whole of the outside of the building, finding some very active spider spots on the way before a suitably silly photoshoot with the feather dusters!

A final run and walk back to the Tap Tavern completed the group run for the week with a Taskforce meeting straight after to catch up on some fun ideas for GoodGym Richmond this summer and beyond!

Removal furniture/books and other stuff for Mr R (WK1)

Due to R's health issue, he cannot lift or move heavy furniture/items and It would be safe for him to access his flat if all his furniture are organised appropriately.
