Bristol Report written by Melanie Young (she/her)
This evening's GoodGymmers were rewarded with a lovely sunset as we ran and walked to Faithspace in Redcliffe to collect the tools and trolleys for the night's path laying.
Last time we'd had days of heavy rain and were glad of the light drizzle, tonight was drier and didn't the turf know it! We seemed to have found a particularly rocky patch which Marky had marked (so Marky-ed, I guess) as the next path joining the planters. There's already been lots of positive feedback about how much easier it is to get to the planters and beyond.
The gravel is a special "self-binding" type which makes for marvellous non-shedding paths and, when its been left a few weeks, a solid lump in dumpy sack.
Once the edges had been marked and knived (?), we split into ground-chiselling and gravel-chillesing teams, definitely a tough workout tonight. Many different strategies were tried with the top methods proving to be stabbing with a big fork for gravel breaking and sitting uphill and spading downhill for turf lifting (called sods, for anyone wondering). We are so creative and adaptive.
Perseverence paid off, the new path was given its preliminary stomp, catwalk-style and flavoured water was enjoyed. Laura and Vaguely Northern Darren headed off for a longer run back whilst the rest of us finished off, tidied up and took the tools back to Marky's workshop.
Top path-making, team!

Somewhere will be looking much better, or worse, depending on the task...

A poem this will be.
Take a look at the photos.
You’ll see the odd tree
Seven GoodGymmers met this Sunday.
For yet another fun day
We emptied a hole and filled another.
We even found some carpet mother!
A difference we did make.
Time for some tea and cake
This poem is done.
I might now have a cinnamon bun?
Until next time…

GoodGym Bath helped out at the Genesis Foodbank only recently but are always happy to come back if needed.
This time we were asked to deal with the weeds on the driveway- not only are they ugly, they also set off the alarms on the delivery trucks. Not ideal in the heart of the busy neighbourhood that is Oldfield Park.
We set to with a rather impressive edging tool and a common or garden trowel and made good progress until the hail came down in force.
Your intrepid team had to run for cover. We didn’t waste any time though - Hilary from Genesis had us collapsing cardboard boxes for recycling. They had held donations for the Foodbank, which helps people in Bath who are struggling during the cost of living crisis.
The skies cleared and we were able to clear a bit more path before home time. There’s still a bit more to do and no doubt we’ll be back before too long.

Bristol Report written by VaguelyNorthernDarren
8 runners (backmarked beautifully by David) and 3 walkers left Queen's Square 5 minutes apart and met exactly 1 kilometre from our starting position. Melanie stayed local as shes being unusually sensible with her broken foot.
For this week's homework, I would like to know how fast each group walked/ran and the first to correctly answer, will win a prize!
On with the task, we found the tools for the job behind reception and set to work on clearing up this amazing (and very well used) community space.
11 hands made light work of the weeds while dodging pre- and post-Pilates people (a novelty, we're more used to Yoga people), and attempting to translate the French lesson from the PowerPoint slides (Vaguely Northern Darren's 'F' in French A-level in 1990 did not help!^)
Richard G diversified and as well as proving adept at light holding, showed us his super sweeping skills, Gareth showed us his knife skills for those hard to reach wall weeds and Frances told a pirate joke that Laura (as our resident Cornish pirate) hadn't heard before!
When there were no more weeds to remove, the Walkers headed in to the night and Jason joined the runners for a change and showed us he can run if he really really really has to!
^Melanie's "A" at A-level Maths in 1991 thinks this was probably also 1991...

Was Frances' joke original or a copy?

The answers are 20mph and as fast as an unladen swallow.
