Weed all about it

Oxford Report written by Anwen Greenaway

We had a muddy and quite chilly evening at Bayard's Hill primary school getting their garden started.

The school had some raised beds built as part of a wider community project, but the area needs tlc before if can be used for growing.

This week we weeded the majority of the raised beds and most of the pile of topsoil to fill them, as well as litter picking the site.

Next week we'll finish that task and top up the beds with soil. Soon we hope to be able to build paths around the beds to make access and maintenance easier.

Looks like we made it!

Oxford Report written by Anwen Greenaway

A huge pat on the back everyone: we made it through the winter! The clocks change this weekend and it'll be return of light evenings from next week.

Ovada are a non-profit gallery space with limited funding and a small staff team. Car park hire is a key source of income that enables them to run events, exhibitions of socially engaged work, and an education programme where they offer a number of subsidised and bursary places.

With only a small staff team it is hard to keep on top of maintenance, so they called in our GoodGym flash mob to get their car park area ship shape.

Bundled up against the spring showers we litter-picked, shifted rubbish out for collection, weeded, and pulled up nettles (achieving the first nettle stings of the year).

In the hour before the light faded we got the area looking a lot better and less nettley. Now we just need some dry weather for the mud situation to improve!

Its BadGym - murder, mime, and m-dubious drawing skills

Oxford Report written by Emma

10 Goodgymers braved the rain for a return to the Thirsty Meeples board game cafe. Despite being quite a large group we managed to find three different games we could all play - Moniker (a mix of charades, one word descriptions, and mime), Fake Artist (the dubious drawing skills), and Deception (figuring out whodunnit). We discovered Colin the Caterpillar is surprisingly hard to draw, there are many ways to commit murder in parks and toilets, and not everyone has a very convincing poker face.

Thank you to everyone for joining these social sessions during the wintery months, any suggestions for more fair-weather options, let me know!

Maiden(head) voyage to parkrun

Oxford Report written by Bethan Greenaway

A wee gaggle of Goodgymers rocked up to Maidenhead parkrun this morning. We were immediately struck by the friendly atmosphere, the run director giving milestone shoutouts to runners and volunteers alike.

We spotted and chatted to a few of our Windsor and Maidenhead counterparts and thoroughly enjoyed the course - a 2 lapper through some gorgeous woodland with Malcolm's Corner and the newly christened Nik's Hill as notable marshal spots.

It was Maidenhead's 9th birthday and people had been encouraged to both bake and dress up. It was so fun spotting costumes along the route - a dinosaur, unicorn, several pirates and an elf being personal favourites! The cake buffet was quite remarkable with a HUGE array of cakes including bricks of sponge and welsh cakes.

Defo one to visit again!

Pod save the plog

Oxford Report written by Anwen Greenaway

We have eyes and ears everywhere, and this week it was Axelle's turn to direct us to the litter hot spots of West Oxford. After a pleasant jog the back route to our rendez-vous point we exchanged podcast recommendations as this weeks ice-breaker. For your listening delight here are the GG Oxford Top of the Pods:

  • Adam Buxton
  • Who trolled Amber Heard
  • Gardeners World
  • Just one thing
  • Dungeons and Daddies
  • Changes by Annie Mac
  • The rest is history
  • My favourite murder
  • This podcast will kill you
  • The rest is entertainment
  • Taskmaster the peoples podcast
  • Blank check
  • 28 ish days
  • Ukraine cast
  • Bad women
  • Things fell apart
  • How to fail
  • Duolingo Intermediate French

Then on to the more serious business of clearing up the trash. It's always quite interesting the different litter we find in different parts of town. This is an area full of retail parks, so although we picked up the usual food detritus we were surprisingly low on booze cans and bottles this week.

Welcome to GoodGym Andy! Always a joy to have Django the pup along, and glad to have made Botley a little safer for his paws.
