Water Lovely Evening !!

Valcie has been kind enough to let us use Papa's Park in Brixton for years to begin our group runs from, it's the perfect place centrally located with a room we can lock our belongings safely in and a play area where we do our warm ups and intros. In return we wanted to help spruce up the place so tonight was our Papa's Park Task! πŸ’™

Lovely warm weather and late evening sunshine meant perfect conditions and we had a good sized group back to our steady double figures which was great. Super Sam was just back from holiday (he practically ran from Gatwick to Papa's to take part!) so the topic of conversation was travelling with friends and the different personalities that brings and favourite holiday destination. 🌞

Some people chose very specific locations (a particular island in the Philippines) while others hedged their bets and picked whole countries (France / Italy) and we had fire (Maldives) and ice (Iceland) so all bases were really covered. Now about splitting the bill at the end of the trip with your friends...... πŸ˜…

We set off on a brisk 3km ring from Papa's, round to Clapham North, up Bedford Road, left onto Acre Lane and then a wiggle through Trinity Gardens / Brixton High St and back to Papa's. Three members of Lambeth's run team (go Katy, go Kaz) who are travelling to York this weekend were present and keeping themselves primed for York ParkRun and the York 10K! 🀩

Once we were back our tasks were to weed the outer perimeter of the park, water all the plants and veggies and clear the leaves starting to fall (and of course a quick litter sweep). 🍁 πŸ‚

With the size of the group this task was complete in no time at all and despite the offer of a HIIT session to wrap things up folks were sidling towards the gate waving and saying goodbye rather too loudly..... ⏱

Another fun evening in the bag and 3 big black sacks full of leaves to show for our efforts, big thanks to all and see some of you this weekend in York and others next week.

Rain Rain Go..... Wait where did it go...... Ahhh There it is!

Tue 24 May

Report written by Yianny

Last night 8 brave souls looked out of their window, saw the hail stones and the tropical thunderstorm and thought "I'm a GoodGymer, this is what I was born to do!" At 6:45 it wasn't looking promising with only Super Sam, Effie and yours truly at Papa's but by 7pm the rest of the crew had turned up and were raring to go. βš‘β˜”

The conditions were truly bizarre, one second blue skies and rays of sunshine immediately followed by cracks of lightning and heavy rain, then a bit of wind moved the clouds on and the cycle repeated but as I said we don't care - we had a task to help out on and Stephen, Bill, Lydia and their team of volunteers were waiting for us at Loughborough Park. ✊

Before setting off we had a quick warm up and the category of the week was favourite breed of dog, Gayle wins for most interesting breed with the Shibu Inu (although we all know Michael had it right when he said Boxer)! 🐢

It's a short run over to LP but this week Effie had kindly offered to come down and be walk leader for us (remember this is an option folks so do reach out and ask if you want to walk to a session - great for those recovering from injury!) so we were there in no time despite the rain.

In just a week so much work had been done by the Urban Canopy guys but still plenty was left to do so we put on our gloves, picked up the hand tools and got cracking pulling and digging up the last of the weeds in the central section of the gravel garden. Charlotte volunteered to grab the secateurs and head of into the undergrowth and start chopping that back as well. 45 mins later we were all suitably knee deep in mud (sorry Saucony) Lucy had been covered head to toe but we had a great time as Sam's speaker kept us entertained with cheesy classic songs! 🎧

So that's it for us and this task after two weeks and an incredible amount of work from GG and FLP volunteers. Chatting to Stephen it looks like we will be back in June for some planting and then again in October for a year end round of planting - personally I can't wait to see the evolution and what it all looks like.

Check out the pics (nice one Effie) and catch you next week!

Loughborough Park Educational Garden Part 2 - Tuesday's Group Run !!

Tue 24 May 18:45 pm
Papa's Park, 10-17 Pulross Road, London, SW9 8AF
Create an educational space for the community

The team at Urban Canopy are helping out Friends of Loughborough Park throughout May to create a new educational garden within the park. http://www.urbancanopy.org/

The space that we are due to work needs a lot of weeds and old plants removed, but it also has a lot of mature trees, which means we are restricted in terms of the tools we are able to use, so there's a lot of work to do!

Tonight is part 2 of a big task which we will complete over two weeks on our Group Runs.

Get signed up and watch the space take shape from start to finish!

The EduSpace Race !!

Oh what a night, late May back in 2022.... This was a really fun one and a task where our GoodGymers could really get their teeth into, let's see what we got up to.

By 6:30pm the sun was still shining and it was a balmy 22 degrees - summer vibes indeed! I had bumped into Maya one of our GGers on the train earlier who informed me that the weather forecast had changed from 50% chance of rain at 8pm to 90% which simply wouldn't do. β˜” πŸŒ‚

Unbeknownst to the runners the AA formulated the warm up into an anti-rain dance, weaving intricate patterns and side steps which were almost perfectly observed by all the runners. The result of course is that not only did the rain rain stay away but it's not coming again until Thursday!! ⚑

This week's category was airlines (favourite, least favourite, simply name any) and we should send a special shout out to Wizz Air for taking care of our Lindy once when she was 'not very well' on one of their flights.

It was a short run to Loughborough Park 1.35 kms each way but that meant lots of time for the task. We were helping out Stephen and Bill from Urban Canopy who are working with the Friends of LP to create an educational garden where there once was a Japanese gravel garden (possibly back in feudal times as now all that was there were lots of weeds)!

Lydia, India (a GGer herself) and the volunteers from Friends of LP were all there so we could get stuck in together with a strangely satisfying weeds clearance task. Stephen explained that the plan is to clear away as much as possible to be able to plan out exactll where and what to plant and create a self-nourishing forest floor garden with each different planted item working in harmony with those around it. βœ…βœ…

We had a solid 45 minutes to attack the pathways and managed to clear a decent chunk of weeds however by the end looking around it was clear there is still so much to be done. Not a problem though, the team will be down there this week and next to continue the work and we will be back next Tuesday to pick up wherever they have got to and take it forward. We are very excited to see what lays in store at the end of it all! 😍

Check out the photos, we managed to add a little to the huge pile Shauna generated all by herself..... πŸ’ͺ

Thanks to the team at Friends of LP, their volunteers and of course Stephen and Bill for having us and Sarah for being back marker for the evening.

What do you Call Someone with a Spade on Their Head??

Tue 19 Apr

Report written by Yianny

Tonight's task was a great one, clearing out the huge planter bed at the top of Brixton Hill so that Lambeth Council can lay down a wildlife protective mesh. It was physical and fun and here's how it went down!

The group gathered as usual at Papa's with a view to getting away early given the size of our task and it was a sizeable group to boot which was great. We also had the pleasure of welcoming Daisy to the group as a new runner in London for just a week and already getting stuck in getting fit by doing good.

The AA selected a seemingly inconspicuous category for the intros tonight which caused mayhem as people desperately tried to remember their favourite movie or tv them song! Shout outs to Eastenders, Crimewatch (!) and Adam's vote of Earthworm Jim.

We set off for the straight shot up Brixton Hill for a nice pacey 2.5kms, led out by Frances who had the afterburners attached to her trainers, a nice run for those wanting to push the pace but also great for those building up their cardio fitness.

Once there we met Jason from Lambeth Council who talked us through the mammoth task and wondered whether it would even be possible to shift that much soil, rubble, stones, litter and tree roots..... Lambethh GG's response: "Yes we CAN!" The group collected green waste bags, shovels, 1 pitchfork and a broom and headed back to shift tonnes of soil (and other debris).

The main highlights of the next 40 mins were the battles for Lucy, Sarah, Emily and Gayle with tree roots (they lost - see pics) and local residents passing by shouting their support and even stopping to ask about GoodGym and how to get involved #winning Thanks to Super Sam for back marking both ways this evening.

This is only part one of the task with us back this evening to move the soil back into place once the work has been carried out, but all round a really satisfying evening's work and well done to everyone !!

The bed will be replanted making it more attractive for the local community

This week we have a two part task to get our teeth into! 🌷 🌻 🌹 🌼

We are helping out Lambeth Council improve the area for the local community at the top of Brixton Hill 🌈

Part 1 We will be digging the soil out of a large raised bed so that a wildlife protective mesh can be installed, and then planted to make the area clean and vibrant. This is for our group runners as part of our normal Tuesday evening session. ⛏

Part 2 We will be back tomorrow with a Community Mission to shovel all the soil back on top of the bed to finish things off!

Sign and let's get our hands dirty!!
