Art Attack

Waltham Forest Report written by Ant Withstandley

I was delighted to see so many people engage with this Training Session. It's fantastic to see that so many of you are still getting out and about and appreciating you local areas during the lockdown. It was also wonderful to so many interesting and often stunning works of public and street art. The variety on offer was quite something and submissions ranged from bright coloured murals to children's lockdown chalk drawings, a locally funded sculpture of a Victoria Cross winning War Hero and a beautiful Henry Moore from one of my trips out to the Isle Of Dogs.

Stuff came in from all around the country too including submissions from Runcorn, Leicester and various parts of the capital. It's also brilliant to see new people joining us for activities in spite of the lockdown restrictions limiting our group activities; welcome Alexandra Winston and Adnaan Keshani.

Enjoy the photos, everyone.

Workin' 9 til nuun

Westminster Report written by Danny

We had a spectacular turn out for the British 10K, where GoodGym were helping put the race on by looking after the 7-8km aid stations, rehydrating runners as they ran past.

One group were on the water station whilst the other group handed out nuun electrolyte drinks.

Water hot day it was!

It was hot hot hot out on Victoria Embankment, but everyone arrived bright and early to set up the stations so they were ready for 9.30am when the race started. GoodGym had the perfect spot - right on Victoria Embankment, opposite the London Eye - perfect for cheering, supporting and handing out water to the runners (plus there was even a bit of shade under the trees!).

It was a mega success and we provided the runners with lots of support for their last push of the race.

Hopefully we'll manage an aid station at the Oxford Half too - so watch this space!

GoodGym Olmpics 2018 - Nationwide Race Open to all!!! The Results!!!

Lambeth Report written by Tom Benson

The Nationwide Race So in preparation for the 2018 GoodGym Olympics I decided to try and host an event that all folks across the GoodGym community could be involved with. This was not a race on the track but wherever you wanted to do it. The rules were simple, plan a 1 km route record it on Strava and you were in with a chance of winning. So not only were there prizes for speed but also the following: • The Bolters – awarded to the quickest individual male and female • The Climber - the runner with the highest overall elevation • The Viewfinder - for the runner who likes a view (or pun). The prize will go to the runner who attaches the best photo with their run (please include the word photo in your run title) • The Artist - the runner who can make the best outline of their run (i.e. does your route look like the GG symbol, if you enter this please include the word Artist in the title) • The Raffler - who doesn't love a raffle? One lucky runner will be picked at random and they too will be a winner. Who knows - it could be you!

You had a week to get your jogs in and when I was finally sent the results and have to say was blown away by the level of participation, over 120 entry, ranging from all over country from Sheffield, Cardiff and York. It was cracking to see some many different type of runs and thank you for giving it a go, nice one!! So without further ado, I would like to announce the results. The Bolters: The Bristol Bullet: Matt Garnet did it in 177 seconds The Sheffield Hot-Shot: Susan Gillie did it in 215 seconds The Climber: There was some steep competition here, South London is lumpy, Bristol is bumby but it would appear that Sheffield is steep whereby he managed an amazing 252 meter climb in a KM. He doesn’t just deserve a medal but a magnum too. (Apologies to Bristol’s Paul Becker who I announced as the original winner, due to an admin error he had come second very sorry Paul) The Viewfinder: Oh you lot do find some nice runs, there were some great shots, some highly commended efforts by: Laura Grassick for a lovely river shot,. The climber Tom Harman had a cracking view of the peek district and another nice view from Susan Gillie and Laura Grassick, Chi caught the sun, Katie Carew-Robinson had a cracking GG group shot, but the overall winner was Stephen Gilmer and team Sheffield Group GG shot, what a corker. Nice one Sheffield.

The Artist – Now its not just about the views its how you run too and there was some cracking shapes created by your stroll. Again Sheffield nearly had a clean sweep with some fantastic Olympic rings. Cara Nicol fully embraced the GG logo, Frances Collier-Wright did a nice flower, Hanna made a cracking fish and Kim Longbon drew something a bit naughty. But leading the charge was London finest running artist James Kerry Barnard with an elaborate angry face, the attention to detail was very impressive, well done.

So all that is left is the one we have been waiting for, everyone love it, thata right a raffle so everyone who entered get a place in the raffle. So the lucky winner is Peter Van Tongeren, a medal will be making its way to you shortly. Thank you all and well done again, nice one, Tom Results (applogies about the formmatting I am looking at getting this resolved asap):

Hills, Mill, Drills and Thrills

Waltham Forest Report written by Ant Withstandley

Maybe it was Jo's talk of the Dutch Masters recently seen on a trip to Bruges before we set off, but the GoodGym Waltham Forest crew got their Rembrandt on big time today. Our mission was some interior decorating at The Mill, a magical community centre down the other end of the High Street.

Great to see GG tourist Ernesto (moonlighting from Islington) who was accompanied by the first timer and painting expert, Chloe. No time was wasted in getting to the destination after our usual conference, headcount and review of upcoming holidays we made a beeline for The Mill. On arrival brushes and rollers were distributed, masking tape was fastened, dustsheets were laid down and the paint was applied. The Mill's main meeting room began to gleam like Meghan Markle's teeth.

While the main body of our crew beavered away in the meeting room, we also had Ercole and Katie sanding, cleaning and painting blackboards and Jennie 'Rothko' Matuszek supported by Ramon who both did a fantastic job on the door frame of the errm latrine. Transforming the off-white woodwork into an intense shade of Dutch Orange!

All in all, I think these GoodGym artisans have paid a fitting tribute to the borough of culture with a fantastic bit of painting decorating.

But, the story doesn't end there. The precision of the painting was matched only by the speed the task was accomplished so we had time to kill, which meant time to drill. We headed south to the Douglas Eyre Sports Ground for x6 100 metre sprints with various routines (grape-vining, skipping, fast feet) on the returns.

With heart rates hitting the heights, we finally headed back (uphill) to Mirth, Marvel and Maud for merriment.
