Dishing the Dirt

Brighton Report written by Rosie

10 Goodgymmers met last night for some unusually energetic autumnal activities. We started with a short jog to the Real Junk Food project on Gardner Street, where the inspirational Emma laid on a veritable harvest festival of activities for us to choose from according to our level of freakishness. There were floors to be vacuumed, fridges to be cleaned out and for the weirdos in the basement kitchen (the Rosies and Angela), walls to wipe and satisfyingly greasy extractor fan hoods to transform.

Michael successfully corralled us back outside for a run down to the i360, where Tara had us doing some actually quite fun exercises involving high planks and crawling on the floor next to the spooky remains of the West Pier.

We then gratefully headed back along the beach and through the city for our social at the North Laine Brewhouse (thank you to Michelle for organising!), where we talked about knitting and bonfires. Wholesome or what?

We’re also looking forward to Christmas (keep an eye on the WhatsApp group for details) and our next Parkrun meetup this Saturday at Hove Prom. See you there!

Up the Garden Path

Brighton Report written by Brighton runner

Who doesn't love a visit to the pub? And when that pub is the Bevy then it is love eternal!

We made our way to the Bevy to meet Dave and Warren, who are major community heroes in the Bevendean area of the city. The vegetable garden in the Bevy is Dave's pride and joy where he grows vegetables and herbs which typically supports community projects that take place at the Bevy. With restrictions over the last 18 months these vegetables have supported local families in need.

All 7 Goodgymers rid the pathway, up through the stepped garden, of weeds and any offensive plants, such as the dreaded bind weed, we could find.

As a show of gratitude, fresh parsley from the garden was offered. Looking forward to seeing what we all did with our bunches in the group chat!

Sweep Thrills

Brighton Report written by Tara Shanahan

Sometime soon, hopefully in the next three months, I will be able to start a run report without commenting on the horrible weather! But last night was another unseasonably cold evening, that threatened but didn’t quite deliver rain. Sherman was proudly wearing his newly acquired 100 good deeds t-shirt whilst I was wearing two t-shirts, a hoodie, a puffer jacket and a waterproof coat!

Resident Stuart was ready for us with brooms and shovels so we could tackle all the fallen blossom that had collected in the gutters. After 45 minutes we’d left the road and pavements clear and had bagged up 7 heavy bags of wet blossom and leaves.

And then some of us went to the pub to meet up with Roy from the other group to celebrate 100 good deeds and a birthday on Friday and just the fact you can go to a pub!!

Snailed it.

Brighton Report written by David Richards

On the 18th May.....yes you heard that right...the 18th May not March...five of us rocked up to Manor Paddock where Luc had the usual amount of jobs for us to do. Diego was banished to the outside patio and flower beds where a lot of weeding was needed. Katharine and I tended to a couple of beds where a crazy amount of weeds and aliums needed removing. Sherman took on a rather large lavender root that had died over winter and Rosie ,who was delighted to have a knee cushion, weeded a bed out back. Despite our number being few we achieved a great deal. I've never seen so many snails in my life either which led to conversations about their pros and cons. Never a dull moment at Goodgym.

Weeding Frenzy

Brighton Report written by Michael Pirrie

Last night we returned to one of our regular projects at Sloane Court, its been amazing to see how much this garden has transformed since we've been involved with it. This time we were doing some weeding to keep everything in order and looking good.

We split into two groups of three, one group tackled the rear garden and the other the front. Frances, Jason and Susan did an amazing job clearing the patio in the front garden of weeds and then got to work on the planting bed, clearing all the unwanted plants. Although I think Susan and Frannie did more of the work as Jason indulged in some of our hosts stories, if you've never heard them you should he has led a fascinating life.

Rosie and Diego spent the evening clearing the main bed at the rear we've been working on for a while now and it's starting to look great ready for the growing season. I weeded the patio at the rear that we've also done a lot of work to clear over the years.

All in all it was really satisfying to keep the gardens in good order and some of the areas are really starting to take shape. No doubt we will be back to soon to continue the work!
