Until the Litter end

Cardiff Report written by Michael

A short one tonight, and a plog around the city - looking at the areas already getting built up ready for what will be Winter Wonderland.

Five eager gymers - doing good.

It was a great chance to chat as we welcomed back for the evening, David. Once gloved and warmed up we began our run, no route just where the litter called to us. Cleaner than it was this time last year, hopefully a good sign of what's to come. Once we had dropped our bags we made our way back to the start for a photo.

David McCullough done a 6 month mission streak.

David just completed a six month streak of doing missions. That’s so many bags of garden rubbish cleared and jobs done to help someone out and put a smile on their face. Give David a cheer to encourage them to keep up the good work.

The invasion of the bluebells

Cardiff Report written by Michael

We had not been back to Samye since the end of lockdown so there was plenty of new things to see, so Michael decided to go earlier and grab a coffee from the café. Darren turned up next a bit earlier so they sat together and chatted for a while in the oasis of the outside covered seating that we had painted on our last visits in 2020.

Once David, Laura and Martin arrived it was time to get to work in the back garden. Lorraine had already explained what needed doing to Michael whilst they were getting the tools out of the shed, so it was time to pick up tools and get busy. In between the paving needed cleaning with the weeding tool, and the Spanish bluebells had to be dug up and removed from the garden. They had been allowed to flower as they had looked nice, but they are an invasive species and can overrun a space if left to their own accord. Finally, the valerian was growing again on the walls, it is roots can destroy a wall if left to grow too much so they also had to go, butterflies do love this plant though so they can be helpful too sometimes.

After an hour we had produced a good heap of weeds which Lorraine was going to deal with another time, and now it was time to make our way back to the seating out front for the usual Samye spread. We had vegan cheese toasties, tortillas, strawberries, and lots of squash to drink. We all had a great time seeing each other again and catching up with Lorraine.

Six things you might not know about bluebells.

  1. The bluebell has many names: English bluebell, wild hyacinth, wood bell, bell bottle, Cuckoo’s Boots, Wood Hyacinth, Lady’s Nightcap and Witches’ Thimbles, Hyacinthoides non-scripta.
  2. It is against the law to intentionally pick, uproot or destroy bluebells.
  3. If you plant bluebells, you should make sure it's the English bluebell, not the Spanish version. This is a more vigorous plant and could out-compete our delicate native flower.
  4. Almost half the world's bluebells are found in the UK, they’re relatively rare in the rest of the world.
  5. Bluebell colonies take a long time to establish - around 5-7 years from seed to flower.
  6. Bluebells can take years to recover after footfall damage. If a bluebell’s leaves are crushed, they die back from lack of food as the leaves cannot photosynthesise.

Weedling away!

Cardiff Report written by Sophie Hastings

Albeit it a little of a late start as some of us got a little lost (me included!), Dave, Gemma, Martin and I met with lovely Michael who informed us that the front 2 beds needed a complete overall of weeding, after a lovely little chat of course.

We got to work with our tools in hand and our wheelbarrow at the ready as this was not our first time gardening - we were pretty much pros at this stage. While having a good chinwag about the upcoming festivities and catching up with each other (although Martin and I had only saw each other this morning!), we finished the first bedding and moved on to the next.

Within an hour or so, the task was completed and both beds had been weeded for a blank new canvas ready for the new plants and flowers to bloom the next spring.

We said goodbye to Michael for now, as I am sure we will be coming back shortly to help with more tasks. Watch this space!

Virtual 5k medal and real life rubbish

Cardiff Report written by Nathan Swain

After completing a social 5k and earning their GG medal, members of GoodGym Cardiff and Vale gathered to litter pick along the Taff trail.

On first appearances the route looked clear, but after heading along the river, around the football pitches and playparks the bags started filling. 11 bags of rubbish were collected in just over 30 minutes.

In the absence of parkrun and GG group activities the social run (split into small groups and varying paces) and litter pick was a clear success and one to be replicated in the future.

Well done to all involved. If you signed up online to the virtual 5k, don't forget to get your times loaded up. The real race starts now - who's medal will be first through the letter box?
