Gardening in torrential rain? We must be daff-t!

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Amy L (she/her)

How many GoodGymers does it take to plant 500 native daffodil bulbs? 10! Plus a pre-party, a lovely task owner, a secret milestone, and a whole lot of rain.

We started this evening's session in an unconventional way - with a party! The foundation stone event for the Windsor and Maidenhead Eco Action Hub a the Nicholson Centre to be precise.

This was a great opportunity to meet and network with members of other groups, who are leading the charge for action against the climate and biodiversity crises in our area. We heard some really inspiring speakers and had a chance to share our ideas for how we can contribute. We also got yummy cake and drinks - yay! We hope some new tasks and/or new members will come from connections made this evening, and that together we can make a difference.

7.30pm rolled round quickly and it was time to tear ourselves away from the party and head to our task. #WednesdayNightIsGoodGymNight and we couldn't let the evening pass without getting fit whilst doing good. It was also time to get wet! The closer we got to the task location, the more it poured. Task owner Rachel Cook, from Wild Maidenhead had said we would need rain to soften the ground for digging, and the weather gods did not disappoint!

Kudos to Gillian and Angie, who ran a meandering route to the task while the rest of us walked the 1km up the hill. Once on location we gathered tools kindly donated by the Maidenhead Community Allotment and Braywick Nature Centre and received our briefing from Rachel: we would be planting native daffs, which bees absolutely love; we should plant in clusters, at least a bulb-length deep, and with a bulb-length in between; and we should beware of dog poo!

Wow, there's nothing like a torrential downpour to motivate you to speed up on a task. We quickly set to work and within 20 minutes we had planted the whole box - a whopping 500 daffs! Rachel was impressed and said she will definitely welcome us to help with more projects in future. She will be putting signs up to stop contractors mowing this verge in the Spring, and we look forward to seeing the flowers of our labour.

Huge congratulations to Rachel, who completed her 50th good deed this evening. We were so busy with the Eco hub and dodging raindrops that we didn't take the time to celebrate, but we promise to make up for it next time.

We didn't linger in the rain after the task, but instead said our farewells and legged it home. Well done team! Many people would be put off by such wet weather be we just daffo-dilled with it.

At least there was cake in the evening - silent celebration for a silent milestone 🤔 Nice report and title Amy! It was surprisingly fun, wet but fun.

Chilly evening...we put on a second coat!

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Amy L (she/her)

Okay okay, I admit I brazenly stole that title pun from Yianny at GoodGym Lambeth, but it was so good I couldn't resist! And it was true too. This evening the temperature did seem to have dropped a few degrees, and we did put on a second coat....of paint at All Saints Junior School!

I need to keep this report short as it was a double good deed day for me, which also means two reports to write, so heree goes:

  • Welcome back Angie! Great to have you along tonight.
  • Thanks to Juli and Angie for leading each other round the block in your run, whilst the rest of us walked.
  • It was lovely to see Nicola in her new black 50 good deeds t-shirt. Nicola was poorly and sad not to be able to join us (to show off her well deserved t-shirt) so we stopped by her doorstep to cheer her up with a song, chocolate and a medal to celebrate her 50th good deed. 'Oh Nikki you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Nikki!"
  • Thanks to Mr Cameron at All Saints for a warm welcome once again.
  • Well done Lena on your first ever paint job!
  • And well done to all the team for lots of rollering and brushing to help cover up all that blue.
  • Special mention to Georgeta for cleaning up the filing cabinets, leaving everything spick and span.
  • Thanks again to DJ Lou for bringing the chooons! And well done Lou for getting your docs checked! Social visits here she comes...
  • Thanks everyone for a super, chatty evening. As ever it was lovely to catch up.

Hope to see you all soon for more GoodGyming!

All the Pringle ladies!

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Amy L (she/her)

A huge thank you to Wendy Rumble for guest coaching for us this bank holiday Monday evening, and a warm welcome to Gillian, Vanessa and Victoria, who joined us for the first time. Great to meet you all!

No arm in a few crisp puns now is there?

This evening's session was all about arm drive - learning how to move our arms in the optimum way to enable us to run with more efficiency, speed and ease. The ideal hand position is forefinger and thumb lightly touching as if holding a crisp, and we even had Pringles to practice with! It was really Original. Not that Walkers aren't welcome at GoodGym of course...

The weather was feeling a bit crisp, but we soon warmed up with a lap of the Braywick running track and some dynamic stretches. Wendy had some great arm drills up her sleeves for us including running with no arms, wacky arms, one arm, and throwing pretend rugby balls - all giving us a flavour for how our arms can help (or hinder) us when we run.

Ready to reach for our (Prin)goals, we then practiced our arm drive with three intervals on the track. Everyone worked hard and we celebrated not cracking a single crisp on the run by snacking on them.

Then it was time to packet up at the track and head for the hills. We jogged to the Braywick Nature reserve, where Wendy cheerfully informed us we would be tackling the parkrun hill and a loop round the pond repeatedly for 7 minutes. Again, everyone worked hard, rising to the challenge with smiles and enthusiasm. Chip chip hooray!

Allot-a tasks to lettuce us get stuck into!

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Jess Smith

5 Goodgymmers met on another lovely summers evening to help out at the Maidenhead Community Allotment.

It is always a treat to return to the site of Maidenhead and Windsor Goodgym's first ever community mission, and tonight was no exception. There was a list of mini tasks to get stuck into so to get cracking everyone picked a number and were allocated the associated task!

  1. Hannah got the whiffy job of filling the new raised bed with horse manure and then mixing in some top soil to make it ready for more plants to go into the amazing space.

  2. Ange 's tasks was to empty the new water butt, move it to its new location at the back of the shed and then set up the hose to fill the water butt up!

  3. Jess was gifted the awkward task of covering the new wooden frame over one the raised beds with netting to stop the birds getting to the lettuce. Ange also came to help whilst the butt was filling. It was fiddly task as the netting had to be secured to the frame with wool to stop it from coming loose.

  4. Nicola took on the weeding of the areas around the fruit bushes (planted by Goodgym on a previous task), there were lots to be cleared and she ended up with a mountain of weeds to be added to the compost heap. Georgetta also got in on this act and helped give the bushes some space to breathe.

  5. Before helping with the weeding Georgetta fixed some wood edging along the side of the long bed, she did an excellent job and it looks really smart!

  6. Finally a trip to the allotment would not be complete with a bit of watering, with the dry weather it was important to give them a little drink, and hopefully some rain over the next few days will help too.

All the runners were impressed with the changes and the progress at the allotment and agreed it was always a pleasure to help out here. Look out for more tasks at this location!

Special mention also goes to Nicola as this was her 10th Good Deed! Yay!!!
