Gym Runnies

For GG Westminster's final run of the year we welcomed first timers Pei and Mollie and a total of seven of us ran 3.4k down to St Andrew's Youth Centre to give the gym a spring clean.

Armed with anti-bac wipes, cloths, paper towels and sprays we went from machine to machine wiping away the gunk. And everybody knows a clean squat rack means you can increase your 1RM by 40%.

We even gave the mirrors a good old polish. Now the gym bunnies can watch themselves do biceps curls in high definition.

I think it took us about 12 minutes. We dropped off bin bags and then headed off to The Mall for our non-gym workout.

First up was secret surges. My favourite game. Numbers, sprinting, surging, trickery. You know what it is. And if you don't you need to get down to a GG run.

Then we had a two-team three-person relay with a brief pause for some work on our elbows. First timer Pei was announced arm driving champion of the evening.

Then on our way back we finished off the tougher stuff with a race up the stairs, incorporating our newly-discovered arm driving technique. Chris came out on top by about a millisecond.

The journey back was uphill but we were consoled by the sight of all those lovely Christmas lights.

Well done everybody. GG Westminster is back on the 4th Jan. I hear it's the best way to work off all those extra mince pies.

Managing dirt and finding Nemo...

With a 9-strong team, Goodgym Westminster headed to Paddington Recreational Ground for an evening of gardening and accidental fishing (please note no fish were harmed in the performing of this task).

With a long run ahead there was no time for hanging around, so the aptly named ‘dirt-management’ squad packed their marigolds and hit the road.

A solid effort was made by all on the run down to Paddington, which comprised a series of jogs, tempo raisers and SPRINTS!! This alongside rescuing an old lady from an oncoming taxi (the good deeds just keep on coming) made for a truly successful start to the evening’s task. Gently bringing it home into ambient Paddington Recreational Ground, the team set about working with haste; sleeves up, marigolds on.

Tasks for the evening had been written on the whiteboard inside and there was no beating around the bush or mistaking our tasks on this one: get the green slime out of the pond and water and weed the plants. Roger that.

The team split in two and half of the good gymers tackled the watering and weeding while the other half tackled the pond. The pond looked as though Shrek himself had belly flopped from 200m above, thick green SPLAT. But with the poise and limb extension of Graham leading by example, the team were able to de-Shrek the pond and return it to its former glory. However…when the pile of discarded green mush started moving it was realised that a few fish had been beached. They were quickly returned to the pond and did not end up battered with chips for team supper. The other half of the team did a stellar job and put their marigolds to excellent use, weeding and watering the plants, ensuring that the garden could continue to flourish. Once the dirt had been managed and Nemo had been returned to the big blue ocean of the 3x3m pond, the team de-gloved and headed back to the West-end.A great evenings work all round!
