Tonight we were off to assist the YMCA on their allotment. They weren't joining us on this occasion so it was a GG only session; not a problem though as we have keys for the container and an unrivaled keenness for working in dark and cold wintery conditions!

This evening our task was to either weed a raised bed or clear the cracks in-between the paving slabs. We unanimously opted for the former. We fired up the floodlight and retrieved kneeling pads, trowels, gloves and trugs from the container. Our challenge for the evening was to completely clear a large raised bed of weeds.

A trowel in the hand is worth two in the bush

The floodlight and headlight were positioned so that we had a clear view of the weeds we were targeting. This light positioning coincidentally lit up a blank wall on a building over the road from the allotment which presented the opportunity for some shady shadow puppetry shenanigans . We attempted to project a GG logo, with each of us aiming to do a 'g'. This partially worked, though in practice looked more like a cobra attacking a mop. We had a 'hard' time breaking through the icy ground to uproot the weeds, though we persevered and managed to rid the entire bed of the pesky blighters!

After filling our trug we downed tools, cleared up, locked the container and attempted to thaw our fingers with some swinging arm loops. Just as our hands were warming up it was time for some good ol tricep dips on the frosty benches because we love to be cool. Hands nice and icy once again, we ran back down the hill, focusing on good technique as always. On the way we prepared ourselves for running a Strava segment, the GG Barnsley steep staple that is Fitzwilliam St. We rocketed up the hill and were well and truly warmed up upon reaching the top. All that was left to do now was to catch our breath and head inside to the car park stairwell to stretch off in the relative warmth and do some announcements; we should have some new members joining us on runs soon which we are very much looking forward to, as well as a new task with a new charitable organisation! Woop!

Until next week...
