On the edge

3 Goodgymers cycled to help Team Springboard CIC at their allotment this morning.

Nigel was tasked with completing the edge to the border that he had started on a previous visit (with some help from another allotment volunteer Alex).

Susanne and Katherine were set to work with some more weeding of the dreaded Mare's tail which keeps coming back like a bad penny! Thankfully today we were weeding near the potatoes where the ground has been covered with straw, making it a bit easier to dig and get the long pesky roots out too.

After an hour or so of weeding we were set the challenge of turning the compost pile and moving it from one crate to the next. This started off relatively easily with transferring the pile into the wheelbarrow and then tipping the wheelbarrow into the new area. However, once the pile was big enough to warrant the front of it being blocked with a pallet, it became more of a strength workout. Not only because we had to lift the wheelbarrow up and over the side of the pallets, but also because the compost became more compost-like and hence heavier and damper, making the weight of the wheelbarrow extra heavy. We did however have the amusement of seeing Esther doing her compost dance to keep our energy levels up - standing on top of the compost pile to make enough room to fit everything in.

With the border edging complete and the compost pile turned and secured in its new crate, there was time to crack open the enormous box of jaffa cakes to go with our cool drinks of water and enjoy the zen of the allotment.
