Friends of West Bank Park
Conservation work, edible planting, annual fairs and Christmas carols, pop-up cafes, fundraising to develop the park and playground, campaigning against cuts to the park's budgets, locking and unlocking the park each day and night, involving the community in decision-making about the park, children's and family activities, volunteering opportunities, etc etc!!

Please note that this community mission has been cancelled.

We were asked by Kristina from the Council to help with gritting paths across West Bank Park during the current cold snap.

The park had to remain closed until 1pm on Wednesday 6th Jan due to slippery surfaces and black ice. It took two members of staff an entire morning and early afternoon to sprinkle grit before the park could be open to the public. The paths look like they have been sufficiently gritted now, however this needs checking every evening and additional grit added where required.

The plan is for us to visit on an evening and sprinkle grit on paths across the park. City of York Council staff will be checking the paths in the morning, before opening the park.

We will be given a key to the gate and the tools store where we will find equipment necessary for the task: wheelbarrows, snow scoops to put the grit on etc. The park will be closed, or about to be closed for the night by the security company.

IMPORTANT

To avoid slipping and falling on a frozen surface walk using small steps and try to have both feet on the ground as much as you can. Wear shoes with good grip. It will be cold, so try warming up before coming to the task.

Bring your gardening gloves and a head torch, as it will be dark.

It is crucial that we all follow the latest COVID-19 guidance while at the task.

This task is classes as essential in order to keep the park open for its users.

Due to mild weather the task owner asked us to postpone the task. Should we have another prolonged cold spell we will be asked to help again.
