After having ran or volunteered at the Parkrun in Locke Park we had a gentle walk up to the Locke Park tower to help the Friends of Locke Park with a very special task; cleaning and sprucing up the tower. The tower and surrounding area are only open to the public once a month, so we were very honoured to have it opened up for us to work on. We were met by Anne and some other FoLP volunteers, along with Kirsty, who as one of our core members had agreed to meet us at the tower despite being very busy the night before; woop, nice one!

We were told a little of the history of the tower, which was erected in honour of Mrs Locke, wife of Joseph Locke whom the park is named after. It sports 360 degree views of the park and surrounding area. Anne and the FoLP had organised putting some boards up around the outside of the tower for us so we could read about it's history too. We were certainly not board!

After this knowledge boost, we all got to work. We were scraping moss around the outside of the tower, sweeping the steps of dust, stone and debris, wiping down the windows and paintwork and brushing away the mountains of cobwebs from the ceilings. "What wicked cobwebs we weave". We were also joined by two very young birds at the top of the tower who could not yet fly, hence the title!

There wasn't much room but there was definitely a view and lots and lots of dust! 'A cramped space with a view' is the phrase I think!

After some hard work, with everyone having put in substantial effort, we were treated to drinks and special Jubilee delights. Chats were had and we agreed with the FoLP that it would be a good idea for us to return in future. With that goodbyes were said and we helped take the equipment back down to the storage shed, passing by areas where we have done jobs for the park previously.

Great work all!
