Six runners (or rather, four runners, one cyclist and one walker) met up to work in Tabitha’s back gard- ahem, I mean, the Ingram Crescent Community Garden in West Hove.

GoodGym Brighton first visited the ICCG almost three years ago to the day when residents had first taken it over from the council. We helped them begin its transformation from a totally overgrown jungle of weeds, into the lush ornamental, veggie and fruit garden it is today. Indeed, we gawked at some photos Tara had from that first day, comparing them with what was now before our eyes. The resident gardening club, under the confident leadership of Kim, have done an incredible job managing the space, providing a most pleasant oasis for all to enjoy, and to develop gardening skills.

Under the auspices of Kim and Vic, GoodGymers took to all corners of the garden to pull, dig, snip, and preen. Jacob did some tilling in a soon-to-be late-potato patch, while Tara and David went after baby bindweed in the salad patch and rose garden respectively. Tabitha did a bit of dead-heading – that is, snipping off expired flowers to support the plants to generate new blooms – and some preening of rose leaves infected with the ‘black spot’! Paul and Roy dug up spent broccoli beds, to make room for new crops.

After some kerfuffle over local children using the water butt as a water gun fill-up station, Kim and Vic plied us with spoils from the garden for our troubles (which of course were no troubles at all as we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!). By foot and wheel, we left with baggies of fresh lettuce, green beans, tomatoes and strawberries.

We will be returning to the Ingram Crescent Community Garden soon.
