Four of us returned for our weekly visit to tend the allotment plots used as therapy gardens by patients from the Maternity Unit at Wexham Park Hospital.

I like the way you weed it, no diggity

This week Sara and I (Sandy) felt like farmers turning up and weeding what felt like mini field, while unearthing all sorts of unexpected things in the growth - from garden tools and drinks bottles to onions way past their prime, plastic bags and countless snails (which we tried our best not to disturb)...Raking and digging in a number of directions to bring up all those pesky (and never-ending today) weeds, we certainly felt like we had had a nice full body workout by the end.

Soil of the century

Meanwhile Nisha and Gauri were busy clearing the rather jungle-like bed next to us, helping to get it ready for more patients to start tending to their own produce in. They also managed to find the odd tomato plant which they nearly mistook for weeds, but luckily were able to salvage and repurpose in a nearby plot. This was all while taking it in turns to fill up the wheelbarrow with our green waste - that is, when they weren't taking it turns to ride about in it themselves!

Great fun and worthwhile work as always and we're looking forward to being back again next week!
